Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd, a prominent retailer in India, has announced a new joint venture with Mothercare plc. This collaboration involves Reliance Brands Holding UK Limited (RBL UK), a subsidiary of Reliance Brands Limited, partnering with the global specialist in products for parents and young children. The joint venture will manage the Mothercare brand and its intellectual property in India and nearby regions like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

RBL UK will hold a 51% stake in this joint venture, while Mothercare Global Brand Limited will maintain the remaining 49%. The acquisition of this stake by RBL UK involves a cash payment of 16 million British pounds. This partnership aims to serve as the franchisor for the Mothercare brand in these South Asian markets, creating new growth opportunities by combining the strengths of both companies.
Expansion of Mothercare Brand
Reliance Brands' Managing Director expressed enthusiasm about this new phase in their partnership with Mothercare. "Mothercare has been a trusted name for parents in India for years, and this joint venture marks an exciting new chapter in our partnership," said Mehta. He is optimistic about expanding the brand's presence across South Asia through this collaboration.
Reliance Brands initially acquired the rights to operate the UK-based Mothercare brand in India back in 2018. Since then, they have established 87 stores across 25 cities and have a significant presence on e-commerce platforms. This new agreement is expected to further strengthen their operations and expand their reach.
Strengthening South Asian Operations
Clive Whiley, Chairman of Mothercare, highlighted the importance of this agreement for their operations in South Asia. "Today's agreement strengthens our operations in South Asia through an even closer working relationship with Reliance, our existing valued franchise partner, and underlines the intrinsic value of the Mothercare brand strength," he stated. This partnership is seen as a strategic move to enhance their market position.
The joint venture between Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd and Mothercare plc signifies a significant step forward for both companies. By leveraging each other's strengths, they aim to unlock new growth opportunities and expand their presence in key South Asian markets. This collaboration is expected to benefit both parties and strengthen their positions in the region.
