Runway 28/10 at Delhi Airport to Close from Tomorrow; 114 Daily Flights Likely Affected from 15 June to Sep

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi will temporarily close Runway 28/10 from tomorrow, 15 June 2025 until mid-September 2025 to facilitate an upgrade of the airport's Instrument Landing System (ILS). This critical infrastructure work is expected to disrupt flight operations, with around 100 flights will be cancelled or rescheduled daily throughout the three-month period.

The closure has been strategically timed to avoid the peak summer travel season and to align with projected shifts in wind direction. Nevertheless, the suspension of operations on Runway 28/10 is likely to lead to considerable daily schedule adjustments.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed the decision in May and stated that consultations with airlines and other stakeholders are ongoing to mitigate disruption to scheduled services.

Delhi Airport Terminal 2 Closed for Redevelopment; Flights Shifted to Terminal 1

In a related development, Terminal 2 (T2) at IGIA ceased operations on 15 May 2025. As a result, 122 IndiGo flights previously handled at T2 have been relocated to Terminal 1 (T1), which has recently been expanded to accommodate increased passenger volumes. The closure of T2 enables a significant redevelopment project aimed at modernising the terminal with facilities such as self-check-in kiosks, an upgraded baggage handling system, and improved passenger amenities. Upon completion, T2 may be repurposed for international use or to manage additional domestic traffic.

IGI Airport operates approximately 1,300 flights each day, making it the busiest airport in India and one of the most active globally in terms of air traffic. The airport features four runways-09/27, 10/28, 11R/29L, and 11L/29R-designed to manage heavy air traffic efficiently in all weather conditions. IGIA comprises three main terminals: Terminal 1, which primarily handles low-cost domestic airlines; Terminal 2, currently under renovation; and Terminal 3, a modern, integrated terminal used for both domestic and international operations.
