The Kerala government has given the green light to acquire land for the Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project, marking a significant milestone in the development of a new airport in Kottayam district.
The long-awaited Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project in Kerala has taken a significant step forward with the state government issuing an order to acquire 2,570 acres of land in Kottayam district. The airport, which is being developed in Erumeli South and Manimala villages, is set to become a reality after receiving the necessary approvals and recommendations.

Government Approval and Land Acquisition Process
The decision to proceed with the land acquisition process was made based on the recommendations of an expert committee that examined the social impact study report. State Revenue Minister K Rajan stated that the choice of land was determined by public demand, the minimum land requirement for the project, and the unavailability of other suitable options. The Union Ministry of Forests, Environment and Climate Change has also confirmed the suitability of the identified land for the airport project.
Timeline for Land Acquisition
According to the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Act, 2013, the preliminary notification under section 111 is required to be issued within one year from the date of submission of recommendations by the expert committee on the social impact assessment report. The expert committee submitted its recommendations on August 22, 2023, which means the preliminary notification of land acquisition can be issued in August 2024. The process will involve checking and confirming land records, conducting a land survey, and issuing the final notification.
Commitment to Timely Completion
Revenue Minister K Rajan emphasized that all the necessary steps for the Sabarimala airport project will be completed in a speedy and timely manner. He highlighted the project's significance as a result of the will of the Left Democratic Front and expressed confidence in its successful realization.
The Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project is a major infrastructure development that will enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region. With the state government's commitment to expediting the land acquisition process, the project is poised to become a reality in the near future, bringing numerous benefits to the people of Kerala.
