SAP Labs India, the largest research and development centre for SAP outside Germany, is intensifying its focus on global AI innovations. Managing Director Sindhu Gangadharan confirmed that plans for a new expansive campus in Bengaluru are progressing well. The first phase of this three-phase project is under construction, with an investment of 80 million euros, and is expected to be ready by the second quarter of 2025.

Gangadharan highlighted the transformative impact of AI and generative AI on businesses. These technologies are reshaping customer experiences and processes. She emphasised India's potential to lead in AI innovations due to its skilled workforce. SAP Labs India is concentrating on Custom AI and multi-agent AI technologies to drive the next wave of business transformation for its clients.
AI Innovations and Workforce
SAP Labs India stands as the largest R&D hub for SAP outside its headquarters, with 40% of SAP's global R&D workforce based in India. Gangadharan stated, "We are 15,600 strong in India, as we speak and 13,600 focused on core R&D." Bengaluru is the company's largest hub within India, with additional offices in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Pune, and Hyderabad.
The enthusiasm surrounding India's tech industry is supported by impressive statistics. Gangadharan, who recently became the chairperson of NASSCOM, noted the growth in technology consumption and digital transactions. Despite global challenges, India's technology sector continues to expand with a year-over-year growth rate of nearly 3.8%, while the domestic market grows at about 5.8%.
India's Role in Global AI
India's appetite for technology is evident through its digital transactions. For SAP, this translates into significant growth opportunities as it remains one of their fastest-growing markets. Industry estimates suggest that AI could impact the global economy by USD 3.4 to 4 trillion in the coming years. Gangadharan pointed out that India leads in AI skills penetration and talent concentration, with 16% of the world's AI talent based here.
SAP Labs India's focus on Custom AI is revolutionising business operations by enabling tailored solutions for unique challenges. This approach allows businesses to achieve unprecedented efficiency and innovation levels. Gangadharan stated that their teams are spearheading this Custom AI initiative to deliver value globally.
The new campus in Bengaluru will span over 41 acres and accommodate around 15,000 employees upon completion. The first phase is currently underway and aims to be finished by mid-2025. This expansion underscores SAP Labs India's commitment to enhancing its R&D capabilities and driving innovation from India for the world.
SAP's CEO has recognised India's pivotal role in driving AI innovation globally. The teams at SAP Labs India are developing numerous innovations across their product portfolio, reinforcing India's position as a leader in AI advancements.
