Makar Sankranti is one of the most important festivals of Hindus celebrated across India. The Makar Sankranti 2026 will be celebrated on January 14 this year, according to Drik Panchang. The day marks the transition from winter solstice to summer solstice. Makar Sankranti also holds immense significance in terms of harvest and agriculture.
Makar Sankranti celebration coincides with different festival celebrations across the country. For example, Pongal is celebrated in South India, Maghi is celebrated in Punjab, Uttarayan in Gujarat, for the duration.

As per the Karnataka state government's circular, schools will remain closed on January 15, 2026, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. This official notification covers government offices and most public institutions, but it does not automatically change dates that private schools have previously listed.

Several schools and colleges had marked 14 January as the festival break in their academic calendars. Some institutions, including one school in Bengaluru, are now issuing fresh circulars and shifting the Makar Sankranti holiday to 15 January instead.
Other educational institutions across Karnataka have not yet clarified their plans. Many parents and students are waiting for updated notices on school websites or messaging groups. Until they respond, families remain unsure whether 14 or 15 January will be the actual off day.

In Haryana, there will be a school holiday on January 13 and 14 due to Makar Sankranti/Lohri. In Telangana and Delhi, there will be a school holiday on 13th and 14th January due to the festival. Schools will remain closed on January 14th in Maharashtra.
