Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently engaged with three of the seven committees comprising satellite communications and telecom gear makers. The aim was to create a roadmap for achieving self-reliance and global leadership in the sector. The meeting, held on Monday, included advisory groups on satellite communications, electronics ecosystem, and original equipment manufacturers.

Focus on Self-Reliance and Global Leadership
Scindia emphasised that the first meeting with these advisory groups was an exercise in detailed agenda setting. He stated, "These advisory groups have been formed with a very participatory environment where we are all team players towards a common goal...to make India Atmanirbhar, as well as to make India a world leader in the communication space as espoused and envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
The minister highlighted that deep analysis was conducted for each of the three verticals to chart their growth roadmap. The meetings were attended by prominent industry leaders such as Nokia India Country Head Tarun Chhabra, Samsung President and CEO Southwest Asia J B Park, Cisco System India Managing Director Harish Krishnan, STL Managing Director and CEO Ankit Agarwal, Tejas Non-Executive Chairman N G Subramanium, Viasat India Managing Director Gautam Sharma, and Hughes Communications India CEO, President and Managing Director Shivaji Chatterjee.
Identifying Key Issues
Without revealing specific details of the discussions, Scindia mentioned that the satellite communication advisory group has identified 4-5 issues. These will be discussed in detail during the next meeting scheduled for the first week of August. The minister also noted that he would meet three more advisory groups on Tuesday. These groups include telecom service providers, internet service providers and infrastructure, and academicians and research and development.
The minister said that future meetings with these advisory groups would be scheduled on different dates. These sessions will focus on the present status of the verticals and India's potential growth and leadership in those sectors. Scindia added, "If we agree on that plan then what are the drivers that we need to have in place to be able to deliver on that strategy and from the drivers what are the actionable points both for the ministry as well as for industry to be able to deliver."
Industry Leaders' Participation
The meeting aimed to delve into issues related to satellite communications, production-linked incentives, and telecom equipment. Scindia remarked that this initial meeting was crucial for setting a detailed agenda. The advisory groups were formed in a collaborative environment to achieve common goals.
The minister's engagement with these advisory groups is part of a broader effort to make India self-reliant in the communication sector. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India a global leader in this space.
The discussions covered various aspects of satellite communications and telecom equipment. The aim was to identify key issues and develop strategies for growth. The involvement of industry leaders underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector.
The next steps involve further deliberations with additional advisory groups. These meetings will focus on understanding the current status of different verticals and identifying growth opportunities. The ultimate goal is to establish actionable points for both the ministry and industry stakeholders.
This series of meetings marks a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in India's communication sector. By involving key industry players and focusing on detailed agenda setting, the government aims to drive growth and establish global leadership in this field.
