PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated Semicon India 2025 in New Delhi. During the inaugural ceremony, Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY) Ashwini Vaishnaw presented Vikram 32-bit processor. It is the first fully 'Made in India' 32 bit microprocessor that is qualified for use in the harsh environmental conditions of launch vehicles.

India is making significant strides in the semiconductor industry, aiming to become a global leader. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) launched in 2021, has been pivotal in this transformation. With a ₹76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive scheme, nearly ₹65,000 crore has already been committed to bolster the sector. This initiative is part of India's broader strategy to establish itself as a hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.
The SEMICON India 2025 event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2 in New Delhi. This fourth edition is the largest yet, featuring over 350 exhibitors from 33 countries and regions. It is organized by ISM under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and SEMI, the global semiconductor industry association.
SEMICON India 2025: A Global Gathering
SEMICON India 2025 aims to showcase India's evolving role in the global semiconductor ecosystem. The three-day event will bring together industry leaders, innovators, academia, government officials, and other stakeholders. The focus will be on collaboration and technological advancements across the entire supply chain.
The event will feature nearly 350 exhibitors and expects over 15,000 visitors. There will be six country roundtables and four country pavilions with participation from nine Indian states. This makes it South Asia's largest platform for the semiconductor and electronics industries.
Key Highlights of SEMICON India
The theme "Building the Next Semiconductor Powerhouse" highlights India's progress in semiconductors. The event will cover innovations and trends in areas like Fabs, Advanced Packaging, AI, smart manufacturing, supply chain management, sustainability, workforce development, designs, and startups.
Special features include programs like Workforce Development Pavilion aimed at building a diverse talent pipeline by attracting the next generation. By 2030, an additional one million skilled workers will be needed in this sector.
Sustainability and Skill Development
Sustainability remains a key concern as businesses face challenges like global warming and resource stress. Efforts are being made to reduce emissions and enhance circularity within the industry.
The India Semiconductor Mission offers skill development programs to nurture talent. Over 60,000 students have benefited from these initiatives so far. These programs provide hands-on learning opportunities to prepare a new generation of engineers and designers.
India's Role in Global Semiconductor Market
The global demand for chips is rising rapidly but supply chains remain fragile due to geographical concentration. India is emerging as a key player with initiatives like Electronics Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) under Make in India.
India's market is expected to occupy a substantial portion of the global semiconductor market projected to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030. The country aims to contribute significantly across equipment production, materials sourcing, and services like R&D.
Recent Developments in India's Semiconductor Journey
In May 2025 two advanced semiconductor design facilities were inaugurated in Noida and Bengaluru focusing on advanced 3-nanometer chip design. This marks a significant milestone in India's semiconductor innovation journey.
The Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that designing at 3 nanometers represents next-generation technology for India which had previously achieved designs at 7nm and 5nm levels.
Conclusion
India's ambitious journey into semiconductors exemplified by SEMICON India 2025 signals a transformative era of technological self-reliance underpinned by government initiatives such as Production Linked Incentive schemes. With substantial financial commitments strategic resource allocation focused on creating holistic ecosystems; India lays groundwork for global leadership within vital sectors including electronics automobiles positioning itself future-ready amidst shaping world dynamics foundationally crucial sectors alike semiconductors today tomorrow globally interconnected economies depend upon resilient secure diversified supply chains ensuring continued progress prosperity worldwide shared vision collective efforts driving innovation forward together united purpose common goals achieving excellence beyond boundaries limitations past present future possibilities endless potential awaits discovery exploration realization dreams aspirations fulfilled reality tangible outcomes meaningful impact lives everywhere positively influenced empowered enriched enhanced transformed better brighter tomorrow awaits us all embrace opportunity seize moment make difference now forevermore!
