While the Sensex hit the record high level of above 42000 in early trade on Thursday, it pared its early gains and closed at 41932.56, up 59.83 (+0.14%) . Nifty too traded with volatility and ended at 12354.05, up 10.75 (+0.09%).
On the Sensex, top gainers include Nestle (up 3%), PowerGrid, Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, and Kotak Mahindra Bank (all up 1%) while NTPC was the major loser.

All of the sectoral indices were in the green except for the metal index.
Today's historical gains have been made from cues in the global market which have been upbeat after the signing of US China deal. Further, the market is speculative of some of the measures that can be taken to lift Indian markets such as withdrawal of LTCG tax on equities.
In the broader market also mid cap space continued its outperformance.
Meanwhile, rupee was trading lower at 70.93 versus its opening of 70.79 per US dollar.
