Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, highlighted the environmental threat posed by single-use plastic. He expressed concern over the lack of alternatives that compels states to allow its use. Speaking at an event by Balrampur Chini Mills, Fadnavis noted that despite bans, half of the plastic used remains single-use.

Fadnavis mentioned that without sustainable packaging solutions for exports, single-use plastic continues to be necessary. "And I think today the biggest threat to our environment is this single-use plastic," he stated. The Chief Minister also encouraged Balrampur Chini Mills to consider investing in Maharashtra, noting their existing operations in Uttar Pradesh.
Sugar Industry Challenges and Investment Opportunities
Fadnavis discussed the ongoing challenges faced by the sugar industry, particularly regarding fair and remunerative pricing (FRP). He explained that sometimes the cost of raw materials exceeds the selling price of finished products due to global market influences. Domestic factors also impact FRP decisions for farmers.
He further elaborated on issues arising from excess sugar production. This surplus often leads to export restrictions as a means to control domestic retail prices. Despite these challenges, Fadnavis remains optimistic about investment opportunities in Maharashtra's sugar sector.
Balrampur Chini Mills' New Biopolymer Initiative
Balrampur Chini Mills introduced India's first Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) brand, Balrampur Bioyug, marking a significant step in biopolymer manufacturing and sustainable industrial practices. The company plans to invest Rs 2,850 crore in establishing a PLA plant adjacent to its current facility in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister humorously remarked about discussing with Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, to facilitate Balrampur Chini Mills' investment in Maharashtra. This initiative could potentially boost Maharashtra's economy while promoting sustainable practices.
The launch of Balrampur Bioyug represents a promising advancement in reducing reliance on single-use plastics. By investing in biopolymer technology, Balrampur Chini Mills aims to contribute positively to environmental sustainability and industrial innovation.
