SpiceJet, a prominent player in India's aviation sector, recently made headlines with its announcement of leasing two wide-body A340 aircraft to bolster its fleet for the upcoming Haj Operations. SpiceJet shares surged by 7.65% to Rs 58.25 on the BSE, while on the NSE, the stock rose by 7.56% to Rs 58.20. During intraday trading, the BSE witnessed a traded volume of 38.34 lakh shares, whereas the NSE recorded 43.07 lakh shares traded.

The decision to lease these aircraft reflects SpiceJet's strategic approach to meeting the increasing demand for air travel, particularly during religious pilgrimages like Haj. With each aircraft boasting a seating capacity of 324, the airline aims to ensure seamless transportation for pilgrims embarking on the sacred journey from various Indian cities, including Srinagar, Guwahati, and others.
"We are happy to announce the finalisation of the lease agreement for the induction of two wide-body A340 aircraft into our fleet, further enhancing our capacity to serve the needs of our passengers, especially during the upcoming Haj operations. These A340s will not only elevate our service standards but also play a vital role in enhancing our revenue streams," Chandan Sand, Head of Legal at SpiceJet, said in a statement.
The commencement of the Haj operations, scheduled to begin on May 9, 2024, signifies SpiceJet's readiness to cater to the needs of pilgrims from diverse geographic regions. With flights planned from seven Indian cities, the airline aims to facilitate smooth travel experiences for pilgrims bound for Medina, underscoring its commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence.
SpiceJet's Haj operations have historically been a significant revenue generator, as evidenced by the substantial revenue of Rs 337 crore generated last year. The successful execution of over 200 special flights, carrying more than 21,000 pilgrims, highlights the airline's operational efficiency and ability to meet the unique demands of religious travel.
