With Elon Musk's Starlink edging closer to launching its satellite communication services in India, the internet connectivity in India is all set to undergo a major transformation in the world's second-largest telecom market. Here's a look at how satellite-based internet compares with fiber broadband and wireless broadband in terms of speed, reliability, availability, and cost.
Satellite Internet: Expanding Connectivity to Remote Areas
Satellite internet operates by transmitting data via satellites, making it accessible in remote and rural areas where other forms of broadband are unavailable. However, it comes with certain limitations:
- Speed: 25-150 Mbps (slower than fiber and some wireless options)
- Reliability: Affected by weather conditions, leading to potential disruptions
- Availability: Excellent for remote areas lacking traditional infrastructure
- Cost: Expensive subscription plans with additional costs for satellite dish equipment
Fiber Broadband: The Gold Standard for High-Speed Internet
Fiber broadband delivers data through fiber-optic cables, ensuring high-speed and reliable connectivity. Here's how it compares:
- Speed: 250 Mbps - 1 Gbps (significantly faster than satellite internet)
- Reliability: Highly reliable as fiber-optic cables are buried underground, making them resistant to weather disruptions.
- Availability: Limited to areas where fiber infrastructure is deployed
- Cost: More affordable than satellite, with installation costs often included in subscription plans

Wireless Broadband: Affordable and Mobile Connectivity
Wireless broadband uses cell towers or fixed wireless transmitters to deliver internet, making it a flexible option for many users.
- Speed: Varies depending on 4G or 5G technology
- Reliability: Generally stable during bad weather but can suffer from signal degradation due to distance from towers, interference, or network congestion.
- Availability: Limited by the reach of cell towers
- Cost: Most affordable among the three, requiring only a SIM card for access
Starlink Prices in India
Starlink's price in India is expected to be significantly higher than that of major broadband providers like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, making it a costly option for price-sensitive Indian consumers. As per Bernstein analysis, with an initial setup fee of Rs.52,242 (USD 599) and a steep monthly subscription cost of Rs.10,469 (USD 120), the total annual cost of Starlink reaches Rs.215,600. This is nearly 10-14 times higher than the traditional broadband alternatives, which offer similar internet speeds at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, Starlink's 30% tax and levies further add to the financial burden. Given India's cost-conscious market and the availability of far more affordable broadband options, Starlink may struggle to gain traction unless government subsidies or pricing revisions make it more competitive.
