Statewide Protests Erupt in Himachal Pradesh Against Four Controversial Labour Codes

On Wednesday, various groups, including trade unions, farmers, and apple growers, staged protests throughout the state. They opposed the four Labour Codes introduced by the central government. Demonstrations took place at district and block headquarters, with participants demanding the immediate repeal of these codes.

In Shimla, a significant rally occurred from Panchayat Bhawan to the Deputy Commissioner's office. Hundreds of workers, farmers, students, youth, women, and marginalised community members joined in. They voiced their opposition to the central government and called for the withdrawal of the labour codes.

Protesters Demand Policy Changes

The demonstrators emphasised several key demands. They urged for a minimum wage of Rs 26,000 and a policy to regularise outsourced employees. Additionally, they sought the reversal of orders mandating 12-hour work shifts and night duties for women. Ensuring a legally binding Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops was also a priority.

CITU State President Vijender Mehra criticised the government's decision to replace 29 existing labour laws with new codes. He stated that these changes are anti-worker and favour corporations. "These codes will not only undermine workers' democratic rights but also affect their wages, social security, and safety," he said.

Concerns Over Democratic Process

Mehra highlighted that despite opposition from numerous labour unions, the government proceeded with these codes. He described this move as a mockery of the democratic process in India. The new codes include the Code of Wages 2019, Industrial Relations Code 2020, Social Security Code 2020, and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020.

The protests reflect widespread discontent among workers and farmers regarding these legislative changes. Participants believe that their rights and livelihoods are at risk due to these new regulations.
