Stock Market Holidays in May 2025: The Indian stock markets will remain shut for nearly ten days in May 2025 as the month will witness several occasions like Buddha Purnima, Maharashtra Diwas, etc. Staying updated with Indian stock market holidays helps traders to plan their trading strategy in advance and avoid last minute trouble.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) conducts trading under different segments. BSE and NSE will remain closed for three days next week, ie Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Stock Market Holidays on May 1, Maharashtra Day
Trading on NSE and BSE will remain closed on Friday, May 1 on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. It is celebrated every year to mark the formation of Maharashtra in 1960 after division of the Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat. As it will be a stock market holiday, trading in equity segment, equity derivative segment and SLB segment, currency derivative segments, NDS-RST and Tri Party Repo, commodity derivatives, segment and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segment, will remain closed on Friday next week.
BSE, NSE Holiday on Buddha Purnima
After Maharashtra Day, the Indian stock markets are unlikely to remain closed on a public holiday in May. However, a segment of BSE and NSE will remain closed on Buddha Purnima, ie May 12, for trading. According to BSE and NSE website, trading will remain shut for currency derivatives segment. Apart from these two segments, trading will occur in other segments on the day.
Stock Market Holiday on Saturdays, Sundays
Trading in all segments remains shut on NSE and BSE on Saturdays and Sundays. Hence, the Indian stock market will remain closed on May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, and 31.
Stock Market Holidays in 2025
There will be no additional stock market holiday in June and July this year. In August, BSE and NSE will remain shut on 15 August, on Independence Day. There will be a trading holiday on August 27 on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. BSE and NSE trading will remain shut on October 2, October 21, and October 22, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti/Dussehra, Diwali/Laxmi Pujan and Diwali Balipratipada.
In November and December, NSE and BSE will remain shut on Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev and Christmas.

The thirty-membered benchmark index, BSE Sensex, ended the sessions 588.9 points down at 79,212.53.. While Nifty 50 fell by 207.35 points or 0.86% to end at 24,039.35. The decline in stock market in past few sessions has come after a period of recovery when the Indian bourses regained their April 2 levels, before US President Donald Trump's announcements.
The recent stock market crash has come in the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan ater the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. In a sharp diplomatic reaction to the terror attack, India has suspended Indus Waters Treaty, shut Attari Border check post and cancelled all Pakistani visas.
