A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, April 23, at 3:19 PM IST (local time 12:49 PM), according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were strong enough to cause widespread panic among residents, but as of now, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The earthquake was centred in the Sea of Marmara, just off the coast of Istanbul and was felt across various parts of Istanbul and surrounding regions. Emergency services were put on high alert, and authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Local disaster management officials confirmed that assessments are underway to check for structural damage or injuries as per reports.
Social media platforms are flooded with posts from residents who felt the tremors, many of whom evacuated buildings as a precaution.
Turkey is located in one of the most seismically active zones in the world, and Istanbul, in particular, lies near the North Anatolian Fault which is a major fault line that has produced significant earthquakes in the past as per reports.

While no official damage has been reported yet, citizens have been advised to stay alert and follow safety instructions from local authorities. Further updates are awaited as officials continue their inspection and rescue teams remain on standby.
