Ratan Tata Will: Mohini Mohan Dutta, a former director of the Taj Hotels Group and the only non-family beneficiary named in the will of former Tata Group head Ratan Naval Tata, has formally accepted its terms, paving the way for its legal execution, as per reports.
According to a report by The Times of India, Dutta had at first refused to accept the will, reportedly because he had concerns about how the estate was valued. However, the will included a condition that anyone who challenged its terms would lose their right to any inheritance.

After receiving a court summons along with other involved parties, Dutta has now agreed to accept the terms of the will. As outlined in the will, Dutta is entitled to one-third of the remaining estate, estimated to be worth around Rs 588 crore.
Value of Ratan Tata's Estate
The overall value of Ratan Tata's estate is believed to be approximately Rs 3,900 crore, with the rest to be shared among several other beneficiaries, including his step-sisters, Dina and Shirin Jeejeebhoy who are also named as executors.
Beneficiaries Named in Ratan Tata Will
The will is reported to name 24 beneficiaries in total, including 77-year-old Mohini Mohan Dutta. It specifically covers movable assets such as bank deposits, foreign currency holdings, valuable artefacts, and precious crystals, while expressly excluding immovable property and equity holdings in Tata Group companies.
The total inheritance, valued at around Rs 1,764 crore, includes bank savings, foreign currency, rare crystals, and valuable artefacts. Dutta's portion includes Rs 588 crore and more than one lakh shares in Tata Capital, which are currently worth over Rs 10 crore.
After Dutta initially refused to accept the will, other beneficiaries approached the court to trigger its execution. This led to the court summoning all parties to express their positions on the matter.
Dutta will not be subject to tax on the Rs 588 crore inheritance, as Indian law exempts property received via a will from taxation.
Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta? What Was His Relationship with Ratan Tata?
Mohini Mohan Dutta is a close associate of Ratan Naval Tata. Dutta and his family previously owned Stallion, a travel agency that merged with Taj Services in 2013. Dutta held an 80% stake in Stallion, with the remaining 20% owned by Tata Industries. He also served as a director at TC Travel Services, an affiliate of Thomas Cook. This longstanding association with the Tata Group likely influenced Tata's decision to include Dutta as a significant beneficiary in his will.
Mohini Mohan Dutta's relationship with Ratan Tata began in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, when they first met-Tata was 25 years old, and Dutta was just 13. Recognising Dutta's potential, Tata later invited him to Mumbai, where he played a pivotal role in helping Dutta set up a travel agency.
Over time, the travel agency expanded its operations and was integrated into Tata Capital. The firm went on to handle travel and logistics functions for the Taj Hotels Group, one of the crown jewels of the Tata Group's hospitality arm. Dutta subsequently became a director at the Taj Hotels Group, a role he held until 2019.
Following his tenure, the travel agency was sold to Thomas Cook, marking the end of a decades-long association with the Tata conglomerate's hospitality and travel interests.
