Tech giant Apple has made the decision to halt its ventures into the electric and autonomous car industry, alongside discontinuing efforts to pioneer next-generation display screens for smartwatches. This move, reported by Bloomberg, has resulted in a significant number of layoffs primarily based in California.
The decision to scrap these projects wasn't impulsive; rather, it stemmed from Apple's struggle to define a clear direction for the car project amidst its staggering costs. The challenges didn't end there; the display screen initiative faced its own share of hurdles, including engineering complexities, supplier issues, and production cost management problems.

Approximately 600 employees in California bore the brunt of these project closures, with the epicentre of job losses located at Apple's main car project office in Santa Clara. While some affected employees were fortunate enough to transition to other teams within Apple, focusing on areas like artificial intelligence and personal robotics, the overall impact on the workforce was significant.
Apple has maintained silence regarding the exact count of employees affected by the layoffs, and the WARN notices filed with the state only provide insights into job losses within California. This hints at the likelihood of a broader scale of reductions, considering Apple's dispersed workforce across multiple locations nationwide, as indicated by the report.
Interestingly, a considerable portion of the terminated employees, numbering at least 87, were part of a secretive Apple facility dedicated to advancing next-generation display technologies. The remaining impacted workers were associated with various locations linked to the now-scrapped automotive project.
The primary car-related office in Santa Clara witnessed the departure of 371 employees, with dozens more affected across satellite locations. Despite the setback, Apple sought to mitigate the impact by reassigning some former members of the car team to other burgeoning projects, including ventures into artificial intelligence and personal robotics.
