Telecom operators are working urgently to restore and enhance connectivity in Kerala's Wayanad district, which has been severely affected by landslides. This effort aims to ensure communication between rescue teams, government officials, and the public, according to an official statement released on Thursday.

Massive landslides triggered by heavy rains struck Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha hamlets early Tuesday morning. These landslides have resulted in the deaths of 177 people, including women and children.
Telecom Operators' Efforts in Wayanad
To maintain essential communication channels, BSNL, Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea have augmented and restored telecom infrastructure in Wayanad. This initiative is crucial for facilitating rescue operations and keeping the public informed.
BSNL has provided 4G services in the landslide-hit areas of Chooralmala and Mundakkai. They have also installed diesel engines to ensure that the towers remain operational even during power outages.
Jio's Contribution to Connectivity
Recognising the critical need for reliable connectivity, Jio has installed a second dedicated tower in response to a request from state disaster management authorities. This additional tower supports the control room and various relief camps, enhancing coordination in rescue efforts.
Airtel has offered 1 GB of free mobile data per day, unlimited calling, and 100 SMS per day for three days to prepaid customers whose validity has expired and who are unable to recharge. Additionally, Airtel has extended bill payment dates for all postpaid customers by 30 days.
Relief Measures by Airtel and Vodafone Idea
Airtel has converted all its 52 retail stores in Kerala into relief collection points. People can drop off relief materials at these stores, which will then be handed over to local authorities for distribution to affected communities in Wayanad.
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has provided 1GB of free mobile data per day for seven days, automatically credited to users' accounts. This allows users to stay connected with loved ones and access information without interruption. Vi has also extended bill payment due dates by 10 days.
In support of ongoing relief efforts, Vi is transforming all its stores across Kerala into collection points for relief materials. The public can donate essential items at any Vi store to aid the relief operations in Wayanad.
The combined efforts of these telecom operators are crucial in ensuring continuous communication during this crisis. Their initiatives are helping rescue teams coordinate better and enabling the public to stay informed and connected.
