Tesla has officially marked its entry into the Indian market with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai. The American electric vehicle (EV) giant, led by Elon Musk, unveiled its maiden retail space on Tuesday at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a key commercial hub in the city.
The launch is a significant milestone for Tesla as it steps into one of the world's fastest-growing EV markets. The Mumbai showroom will serve as the company's flagship display and customer experience center, allowing prospective buyers to explore Tesla's technology and vehicles up close.

Tesla' First Showroom in India: Launch Begins With Model Y
Tesla will begin its India journey with the Model Y SUV, which will be available in two variants. According to the company's website, the rear-wheel drive Model Y is priced at Rs 60 lakh (approximately $69,765), while the long-range rear-wheel drive version will cost Rs 68 lakh. These prices are significantly higher than Tesla's base pricing in other markets, largely due to high import duties in India.
For comparison, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the U.S., 263,500 yuan in China, and €45,970 in Germany. In India, the vehicle will be sold as a completely built unit (CBU), attracting steep customs duties that push up the retail price.
The vehicles are expected to be imported from Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai, which serves as a production hub for multiple international markets. So far, Tesla has shipped six Model Y units to India, which are likely to be used for display and test drive purposes at the new showroom.
Alongside the vehicles, Tesla has also imported Supercharger equipment and accessories worth nearly $1 million into India, primarily sourced from China and the United States. These charging units are expected to be deployed around Mumbai to support the brand's early customers.
Tesla Service Centre in Kurla West Mumbai
Tesla is also setting up a service center in Kurla West, Mumbai, to handle maintenance and after-sales support. This aligns with the company's broader plan to expand its footprint across the country based on market response.
While this is Tesla's first formal retail presence in India, the company already has a registered office in Bengaluru and an engineering hub in Pune, signaling its long-term commitment to the Indian market.
Tesla Launch in India
In the run-up to the launch, Tesla generated buzz on social media with a teaser from its official India-specific handle on X (formerly Twitter). The post, shared on Friday, featured a "Coming Soon" graphic, hinting at Tesla's long-anticipated India debut in July 2025.
With rising interest in electric vehicles, Tesla's entry could add momentum to India's EV transition. The launch also sets the stage for potential future investments, including local assembly or manufacturing, depending on regulatory developments and consumer response.
