Days after Elon Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) his plans to visit India later this year, Tesla Inc. has begun refunding reservation fees for its Model 3 to Indian customers, according to a Bloomberg report.
Citing emails seen by the news agency, the report suggests that the move indicates Tesla's preparations for a more structured and imminent debut in the Indian market.

"We would like to return your reservation fee for the time being," the email to customers reads. "When we finalize our offerings in India, we will reach out in the market again. We hope to see you back with us once we are ready to launch and deliver in your country."
The refund is being issued to customers who had pre-booked the Model 3 back in April 2016 by paying a reservation fee of $1,000, which was approximately Rs 66,237 at the time. Back then, Tesla had not shared any specific timeline for the launch or pricing details of the model in India.
In the email, the company further explained, "The original Model 3 in your reservation was one of the products that have been replaced." Customers were requested to share their bank details in order to process the refund. This suggests a revamp in Tesla's India product strategy, possibly aligning with newer models or updated versions of its EV lineup.
The Texas-based electric vehicle giant has been making strategic moves toward entering India, the world's third-largest automobile market. With Musk's visit expected later this year, anticipation is building among Tesla enthusiasts and investors alike.
Earlier, on February 13, 2025, Musk met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, where they discussed a range of topics including space exploration, sustainable mobility, and emerging technologies. This was followed by a phone call on April 18, where both parties reiterated their interest in technological collaboration, with a special focus on Tesla's future in India.
These back-to-back high-level interactions signal not only Musk's keen interest in entering the Indian market but also the Indian government's efforts to facilitate Tesla's entry.
In a parallel development, EVIndia noted that Tesla has also started hiring for various roles across India, including service technicians, service advisors, and customer engagement managers. Positions have been advertised in key metropolitan cities like Mumbai and New Delhi, indicating the company's efforts to build a strong local team to support sales, service, and operations.
According to a Financial Times report, Tesla is also sending U.S.-based staff to scout potential locations for a new gigafactory in India, estimated to be worth up to $3 billion. The move underlines Tesla's long-term commitment to manufacturing in India.
For years, Tesla's India entry was hindered by high import duties, which made its vehicles significantly more expensive for Indian consumers. However, on March 15, the Indian government proposed a policy change to reduce import duties by 15 per cent on electric cars priced at $35,000 or more, provided the manufacturer commits to setting up local production within three years and imports do not exceed 8,000 units annually.
All these developments strongly signal that Tesla is gearing up for an official launch in India, a move that could redefine the country's electric vehicle market.
