What is a Blood Moon?
During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. Instead of going completely dark, the Moon turns a deep red colour that is known as the Blood Moon effect.
This happens because of Rayleigh scattering, a phenomenon where the Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering blue light and allowing red light to pass through and illuminate the Moon. This Blood Moon of September 2025 is currently the talk of the town because of its long duration.
