The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) released a consultation paper on Friday to review mobile recharge plans. This includes examining separate recharge vouchers for voice calls, data, and SMS. The paper, titled "Consultation Paper on Review of Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations (TCPR), 2012," also considers extending the maximum validity of Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) and Combo Vouchers (CVs) beyond the current 90-day limit.

Exploring Consumer Preferences
Trai noted that despite the widespread availability of bundled plans, which include data, voice, and SMS services, many consumers end up paying for unused data. The consultation paper aims to assess the need for introducing product-specific tariffs for Voice/SMS/Data and their combinations alongside existing tariff offerings. This would involve making necessary changes to the current tariff regulatory framework.
The regulator highlighted that consumers perceive bundled telecom service offerings as limiting their subscription choices. Various stakeholders have shown a strong preference for extending the validity period of STVs and CVs beyond the present 90-day limit.

Trai has invited comments on the consultation paper by August 16 and counter-comments by August 23. This feedback will help shape potential changes in mobile recharge plans and tariff regulations.
