The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has proposed a new experimental authorisation for spectrum in the 95 GHz to 3 THz range. This initiative, named Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation (THEA), aims to foster research and development, technology trials, and both indoor and outdoor testing within this spectrum range.

Scope and Purpose of THEA
According to Trai, THEA will facilitate R&D, experimentation, and demonstration in the 95 GHz to 3 THz range. It will also allow the marketing of experimental devices designed for this spectrum through direct sales. The authorisation is intended to support various entities, including academic institutions, R&D labs, government bodies, and telecom service providers.
The authorisation period for THEA is set at up to five years, with the possibility of extensions in five-year increments. Trai has recommended an authorisation fee of Rs 1,000 for a five-year period. This low fee aims to encourage widespread participation from different sectors.
Eligibility and Benefits
Any Indian entity such as academic institutes, R&D laboratories, central or state governments, public sector units, Union Territories, technology parks, telecommunication service providers, incubators, and original equipment manufacturers can obtain THEA. This broad eligibility criterion is designed to promote innovation across various fields.
Trai believes that THEA will help experimenters evaluate the performance of products in the Tera Hertz band during their conception and development stages. This evaluation will help determine the technical viability of new technologies and services built on this spectrum.
Impact on Innovation and Safety
The regulator highlighted that THEA would encourage entrepreneurs and academia to develop innovative technologies and services in the Tera Hertz band. This initiative aligns with the Government's Make in India programme by boosting local innovation and manufacturing capabilities.
Additionally, Trai has recommended permitting authorisation and assignment-exempt operations of the 77-81 GHz band for automotive radars in India. This move is expected to significantly enhance the safety of drivers and other road users by supporting short-range vehicular radar (SRR) applications.
Upon implementation, THEA is expected to provide a significant boost to technological advancements in India. By enabling extensive testing and development within the Tera Hertz spectrum, it will pave the way for new innovations and services that could benefit various industries.
