Travel Industry Embraces Offbeat Adventures as Affordable Options Gain Popularity

The tourism sector has seen a notable shift towards unique adventures, driven by enhanced infrastructure and relaxed visa rules, making travel more accessible and appealing. In 2024, Southeast Asian destinations have become top picks for travellers, with affordable travel options and payment innovations significantly contributing to this growth, according to industry experts.

Travel Industry Shifts to Offbeat Adventures

Cleartrip's report highlights that affordable travel options have doubled in popularity among Gen Z and senior citizens, indicating a broader inclusivity in travel offerings. Flexible payment methods for travel have also gained traction, with Gen Z showing a 1.4 times higher adoption rate. "With relaxed visa and travel policies, Southeast Asian destinations have emerged as travellers' top choices," said Anuj Rathi, Cleartrip's Chief Business and Growth Officer.

Southeast Asia's Appeal

Southeast Asia remains a preferred destination, largely due to visa-free policies simplifying international travel. Notably, bookings to Denpasar Bali increased by 73% compared to 2023. This surge is attributed to Indigo's direct flights from Bengaluru to Bali, enhancing accessibility for Indian tourists. Other international spots like Tbilisi, Tashkent, Almaty, Da Nang, and Baku also saw significant growth.

Domestic travel trends in 2024 show a preference for beach and island destinations. Agatti Island in Lakshadweep experienced a 94% rise in bookings, while Diu saw an impressive 130% growth. These increases were supported by new direct flights from Indigo connecting Bengaluru to Agatti and FLY91 linking Goa to Diu.

Global Travel Trends

Data from Booking.com reveals an intriguing mix of local and global exploration in 2024. Goa topped the search list with a 200% increase in flight searches year-over-year. Indian travellers also showed interest in cultural and spiritual sites like Amritsar, which saw a 106% rise in searches compared to 2023.

Popular global destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, London, and Bangkok continued to attract Indian travellers. Flight searches for these cities reflected a year-over-year surge of 90-150%. Meanwhile, offbeat destinations like Shahdag in Azerbaijan became popular based on accommodation searches.

Emerging Destinations

Indian tourists are increasingly seeking new experiences abroad. Unexplored international spots like Stepantsminda (212%), Baku (203%), and Tromso (185%) have gained popularity. Domestically, travellers are looking for authentic experiences in places like Perumbakkam, Pangala, and Tekkumuri.

In 2024, top searched attractions on Booking.com included iconic Indian experiences such as the private car tour of the Taj Mahal from Delhi and the Old Delhi food and heritage walk. With sustainable travel gaining traction, e-biking on Divar Island in old Goa was among the top three most searched attractions.

"With the popularity of destinations like Shahdag and Baku in Azerbaijan or Gudauri in Georgia rising, we see a shift towards offbeat adventures," said Santosh Kumar, Booking.com's Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia. Improved connectivity and infrastructure are making travel more accessible and exciting for everyone.
