The Union Cabinet has approved a significant investment of Rs 2,486.78 crore for the widening of the 135-km stretch of Khowai-Harina road in Tripura. This project aims to enhance road connectivity within the state and provide an alternative route to Assam and Meghalaya, reducing travel time and improving safety for commuters.
In a significant move to enhance connectivity and boost socio-economic development in Tripura, the Union Cabinet has approved the widening of the 135-km stretch of Khowai-Harina road. The project involves an investment of Rs 2,486.78 crore, including a loan component of Rs 1,511.70 crore (JPY 23,129 million) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) scheme.

Improved Connectivity and Alternative Access
The project aims to facilitate better road connectivity between various parts of Tripura and provide an alternative access to Assam and Meghalaya from Tripura, apart from the existing NH-8. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the improvement and widening of the road from km 101.300 Khowai to km 236.213 Harina of NH-208, covering a total length of 134.913 kms in Tripura.
Enhanced Interstate Connectivity and Reduced Transit Time
The development of the project stretch of NH-208 will not only improve interstate connectivity between Assam and Tripura via NH-208A but also reduce the transit time and provide safer connectivity for travelers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to highlight the significance of this upgradation, emphasizing its potential to enhance connectivity, open new avenues for trade, and drive socio-economic development, particularly in tribal and agricultural areas.
Improved Connectivity to Bangladesh and Potential for Land Border Trade
The project stretch also passes very close to the Bangladesh border, and its development is expected to improve connectivity to Bangladesh through Kailashahar, Kamalpur, and Khowai Border Check Post. Consequently, land border trade is also likely to grow with the improvement in the road network in the region.
Project Duration and Maintenance
The construction period for the project is set at 2 years, followed by a maintenance period of 5 years for flexible pavement and 10 years for rigid pavement after the completion of construction.
The widening of the Khowai-Harina road is a significant step towards improving infrastructure and connectivity in Tripura. It will not only enhance interstate connectivity and reduce travel time but also open up new opportunities for trade and socio-economic development in the region. The project is a testament to the government's commitment to transforming Tripura's infrastructure and fostering its overall growth and prosperity.
