The article reports on US military strikes against Kharg Island in Iran, examining strategic aims, potential ground actions, and the impact on global oil markets, including Brent price movements and Strait of Hormuz security considerations.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the U.S. military carried out a major bombing raid on Iran’s Kharg Island, escalating a conflict that has already rattled global energy markets and sent Brent crude oil futures above $100 per barrel for a second consecutive trading day.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had instructed the U.S. Central Command to strike what are described as military sites on the island, which analysts often call Iran’s “oil lifeline” because of its central role in the country’s crude exports and its location in the northern Persian Gulf.
Kharg Island military strikes and Trump’s stated objectives
Detailing the attack, Trump posted: "Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran's crown jewel, Kharg Island," while stressing that non-military facilities were spared for now.

Trump said in the same message that he had "chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island." The president then warned of further action, writing: "However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," linking the restraint to shipping security.
Kharg Island, wider Iran war aims and Trump’s comments
Less than an hour after the first statement, Trump again used Truth Social to expand on his justification for the campaign against Iran, posting: "Iran had plans of taking over the entire Middle East, and completely obliterating Israel. JUST LIKE IRAN ITSELF, THOSE PLANS ARE NOW DEAD!" signalling that the White House sees broader regional stakes.
Speaking with reporters before boarding Air Force One for Florida late on Friday, Trump said the military operation in Iran will continue "as long as necessary." When asked how long the war could last, Trump replied: "I can't tell you that. I mean, I have my own idea." Trump added: "I won't give you a time but we are way ahead of schedule."
Kharg Island control, 'unconditional surrender’ and U.S. intentions
Reporters also pressed Trump on what "unconditional surrender" means in the Iran war context. Trump answered: "To me it means very simply that we are in a position of dominance that nobody has seen before, whether or not they're able to say the words..." which underlined the administration’s desire to keep military and diplomatic leverage over Tehran.
Analysts warn that any U.S. attempt to move from airstrikes to seizing Kharg Island would carry high geopolitical and economic risk, given its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz and its value to Iran’s economy, with some experts viewing such a step as likely to provoke a far wider regional confrontation.
Kharg Island economic importance and oil market impact
Kharg Island, a coral landmass about five miles long and located roughly 15 miles off Iran’s mainland coast in the northern Persian Gulf, handles around 90% of Iran’s crude exports and can load about 7 million barrels per day, making it a critical hub for the country’s oil industry and foreign revenue.
Although U.S. and Israeli-led strikes have targeted multiple sites in Iran for nearly two weeks, Kharg Island itself had remained untouched until the latest operation. A previous Axios report on March 7, citing four unnamed sources, said the Trump administration had already discussed the possibility of seizing the island, indicating that planners saw it as a potential pressure point.
| Kharg Island data | Figure |
|---|---|
| Distance from Iranian mainland | About 15 miles |
| Island length | About 5 miles |
| Share of Iran crude exports | Around 90% |
| Loading capacity | Roughly 7 million barrels per day |
Kharg Island, oil prices and U.S. military options
White House officials have earlier argued that oil prices could drop sharply once Operation Epic Fury ends, while White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president "wisely" keeps all options available. A satellite image taken on February 25, 2026, by Planet Labs Pbc and shared via Reuters showed the oil terminal on Kharg Island before the latest strikes.
Energy analysts say any direct attempt to capture or heavily damage Kharg Island would almost certainly require a ground troop deployment, something the U.S. leadership appears wary of, especially given expectations that a major disruption at the terminal could push already soaring oil prices even higher for a sustained period and strain the global economy.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has previously declined to rule out sending American ground forces into Iran but has stated that the U.S. does not plan to get bogged down in the country. On Friday, Brent crude oil futures closed above $100 per barrel for the second straight day and the benchmark has risen more than 40% since the Iran war began, according to market data cited in the report, which also credited CNBC's Riya Bhattacharjee for additional reporting.
