US President Donald Trump is set to receive the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour for his role in a hostage exchange with Hamas. This recognition reflects Trump's diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, particularly following a recent ceasefire.
US President Donald Trump is set to receive Israel's top civilian accolade, the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour, on Monday. This recognition comes in light of his efforts in facilitating the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The announcement follows a recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which Trump helped broker.

"Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future," stated Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Herzog will present the award to Trump during his visit.
Hostage-Detainee Exchange
The upcoming hostage-detainee exchange is a significant part of Trump's 20-point peace plan. This plan aims to end over two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began after an attack by the Palestinian militant group on October 7, 2023. As part of this exchange, Hamas is expected to release 20 hostages on Monday.
In return for the hostages' release, Israel plans to free approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees. This swap is crucial for maintaining the recently established truce between the two parties.
Trump's Diplomatic Engagements
During his brief visit to Israel, Trump is scheduled to meet with the families of those who have been released. He will also address the Israeli Parliament as part of his diplomatic engagements. Following this visit, he will travel to Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.
In Egypt, Trump will co-host a summit focused on Gaza peace alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Notably, Israel has not been invited to participate in this summit.
Award Presentation Timeline
While Trump will be informed about receiving this honour during his visit, Herzog mentioned that the actual presentation of the award would occur "in coming months." This prestigious medal has previously been awarded to former US Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2013 and 2022 respectively.
This recognition underscores Trump's role in fostering peace efforts in the region and highlights ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving longstanding conflicts.
