In a sweeping escalation of U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump has announced a new set of global tariffs impacting over 85 countries, including several longstanding U.S. trade partners. The move, confirmed just ahead of the August 1 deadline, introduces a 10% global minimum tariff and much steeper rates-up to 41%-for countries that maintain trade surpluses with the United States.
Trump Tariffs Imposition From August 7
The new tariff structure, which will take effect after midnight on August 7, aims to "rebalance unfair trade advantages" according to a statement released by the White House. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is currently updating its systems to accommodate the changes.

Trump Tariffs Impact on Various Countries
The updated tariffs will be enforced after midnight on August 7. This delay allows US Customs and Border Protection to adjust their systems for levy collection. Afghanistan faces a 15% tariff, while Algeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina are subject to a 30% rate. Bangladesh will incur a 20% duty.
Other notable changes include Botswana at 15%, Brazil at 10%, and Brunei at 25%. Canada's rate is now set at 35%. The European Union will see a tariff of 15%, similar to Fiji, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Turkey.
Higher Tariffs for Specific Nations; India Among Heavily Taxed Countries
While many countries will see no change in their baseline tariffs, others face increases. For instance, Canada's tariff has risen from 25% to 35%. India is now among the most heavily taxed countries under this new regime, facing a 25% tariff compared to Pakistan's 19%, Vietnam's 20%, and Bangladesh's 20%.
Iraq is also affected by the increased tariffs, facing a rate of 35%. Libya's tariff stands at 30%, while Laos faces one of the highest rates at 40%. Myanmar matches this with another high rate of 40%. Switzerland is close behind with a tariff of 39%, while Syria tops the list with a staggering rate of 41%.
Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam all have tariffs set at either 19% or 20%. Meanwhile, Mauritius and Mozambique both face a consistent rate of 15%. Moldova's tariff is set at a higher rate of 25%, similar to Kazakhstan.
In Africa, South Africa's tariff is pegged at 30%, matching that of Libya. Serbia also faces a significant increase to a rate of 35%. In Oceania, New Zealand sees its tariff set at a steady rate of 15%. Sri Lanka joins Vietnam and Bangladesh with a duty rate of around 20%.
