The Uganda government has commissioned a power transmission project with consultancy services provided by Powergrid. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Vice President Jessica Alupo inaugurated the project, where Powergrid served as the Project Management Consultant (PMC), according to an exchange filing.

Representing Powergrid at the ceremony were Director Personnel Yatindra Dwivedi and Head of International Business Sanjay Kumar Gupta. The event also saw the presence of Uganda's Cabinet Minister of Energy, Ruth Ssentamu Nankabirwa, along with Members of Parliament and top officials from UETCL.
Powergrid's Role in Uganda's Transmission Project
Powergrid provided PMC services for the 132 kV Kole-Gulu-Olwiyo-Nebbi-Arua double circuit transmission line spanning 289 kilometres. This project included river crossings over the White Nile, featuring 120-metre tall towers on each bank, and involved four substations at Kole, Gulu, Nebbi, and Arua. The Grid Expansion and Reinforcement Project (GERP) was funded by the World Bank.
The newly integrated transmission system connects the West Nile region with Uganda's National Grid. This integration is expected to contribute significantly to Uganda's overall growth and development.
Powergrid's Global Footprint
Powergrid operates under India's Ministry of Power and has a presence in 23 countries. As of July 31, the company's total transmission assets include 1,77,790 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, 278 substations, and a transformation capacity of 5,32,446 megavolt amperes (MVA). The system boasts an availability rate of 99.81 per cent.
The Nebbi and Arua substations were officially dedicated to Uganda in a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials. These substations are part of the broader efforts to enhance the country's power infrastructure.
Powergrid's involvement in this project underscores its expertise in managing large-scale power transmission projects globally. The company's role as PMC highlights its capability in delivering complex projects efficiently.
This project marks a significant milestone in Uganda's efforts to improve its power infrastructure. The collaboration between Powergrid and Ugandan authorities demonstrates the potential for international partnerships in advancing national development goals.
The successful completion of this project reflects Powergrid's commitment to supporting infrastructure development in emerging markets. It also showcases the company's ability to provide critical consultancy services for major power projects worldwide.
With this new transmission line, Uganda aims to enhance its electricity distribution network, ensuring more reliable power supply across regions. This initiative is part of broader efforts to boost economic growth through improved infrastructure.
The dedication ceremony highlighted the importance of international cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals. It also emphasized the role of advanced technology and expertise in modernizing power systems.
This project is expected to have a lasting impact on Uganda's energy sector, providing a foundation for future growth and development. The integration with the national grid will help stabilize power supply and support various economic activities.
Overall, Powergrid's contribution to this project demonstrates its leadership in the global power sector. The company's extensive experience and technical know-how have been instrumental in successfully completing this critical infrastructure project.
