Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrives in Washington, D.C. to meet President Trump, discussing urgent peace negotiations and security guarantees to address the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington DC on Sunday to meet with US President Donald Trump. Zelensky expressed his wish to end the conflict with Russia "quickly and reliably." The meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for Monday at the White House, following Trump's recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska regarding a peace agreement for Ukraine.

Zelensky shared on X, "I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so called 'security guarantees' in 1994, but they didn't work."
Focus on Security Guarantees
The Trump administration has indicated readiness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, a move welcomed by both Ukrainian and European leaders. This development comes as European leaders prepare to join Zelensky in Washington on Monday for discussions aimed at preventing further Russian aggression and advancing peace talks.
According to AFP news agency, Zelensky will initially have a private meeting with Trump before being joined by key European figures such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.
Recent Tensions
This visit marks Zelensky's return to the Oval Office after a tense encounter with Trump earlier this year. During their February 28 meeting, Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky on live television for being ungrateful for US aid since Russia's invasion three years ago. They urged swift negotiations to end the war.
The confrontation led to concerns about future US support for Ukraine under Trump's leadership. The exchange highlighted a shift from warmer relations during former president Joe Biden's tenure and raised fears that military aid might be cut off.
European Leaders' Role
European leaders will participate in multilateral discussions with Trump and Zelensky at 3 pm (local time) on Monday. Their goal is to collaborate on strategies toward achieving lasting peace in Ukraine while ensuring no renewed Russian aggression occurs.
The recent summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska did not result in any ceasefire or breakthrough despite what Trump described as an "extremely productive" discussion with "many points" agreed upon. However, he noted that progress had been made even though no deal was finalized yet.
Zelensky remains hopeful that combined efforts from America and Europe will compel Russia into genuine peace negotiations. He emphasized that Ukrainians are determinedly fighting for their land and independence while acknowledging successes achieved by soldiers in Donetsk and Sumy regions.
"Of course," Zelensky added, "Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022." He expressed confidence that Ukraine would effectively guarantee its security through continued collaboration with international allies.
