India is working on a policy to ensure Artificial Intelligence (AI) benefits everyone, according to an official release. UNESCO and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently held a consultation focusing on AI safety and ethics. This event is part of a series of five consultations under the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), aiming to develop an AI policy specific to India.

The AI RAM initiative, a collaboration between UNESCO and MeitY, seeks to identify strengths and opportunities within India's AI ecosystem. It aims to provide actionable insights for the responsible and ethical adoption of AI across various sectors. The goal is to align India's AI policy with global ethical standards, promoting transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness.
AI Policy Development
The stakeholder consultation was organised by UNESCO's South Asia Regional Office in partnership with MeitY and Ikigai Law. It brought together participants from government, academia, industry, and civil society. The focus was on aligning India's AI ecosystem with ethical principles outlined in UNESCO's global recommendation on AI ethics.
This consultation is part of efforts to ensure that India's rapid AI growth aligns with ethical governance. By fostering a holistic AI ecosystem built on safety and trust, India aims to realise its vision of "AI for All." The initiative highlights the importance of ethical alignment in AI governance as India continues to advance in this field.
AI Readiness Assessment Methodology
The AI RAM serves as a diagnostic tool for member states, helping them engage in regulatory and institutional capacity-building efforts related to AI. This tool identifies opportunities for enhancing AI governance structures, ensuring they are equipped to handle the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements.
Through these consultations, India seeks to craft a comprehensive AI policy report that not only identifies current strengths but also explores growth opportunities within its AI ecosystem. The aim is to provide actionable insights that will guide the responsible adoption of AI technologies across various sectors.
As India progresses in its AI journey, these efforts underscore the importance of aligning with global ethical standards. By doing so, India can ensure that its AI initiatives are transparent, inclusive, and fair, ultimately benefiting all stakeholders involved.
