Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasised the need to speed up hydropower projects in Kishtwar, which are anticipated to produce 8,000 MW of electricity. This development aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a significant power hub in northern India. Singh also announced plans for a saffron park in Kishtwar and highlighted the potential of sapphire mines in Paddar for revenue generation and job creation.

During a meeting with the district development Coordination and Monitoring Committee DISHA, Singh discussed various developmental initiatives. The meeting included Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Kumar Shavan, local MLAs, Panchayati Raj Institution PRI representatives, and district officers. Singh urged the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPCL) to provide skill development training to local unskilled labourers to enhance their employability in specialised projects.
Hydropower Projects and Economic Growth
The minister reviewed key connectivity projects and stressed the importance of constructing an airstrip under the UDAN scheme to improve accessibility in Kishtwar's challenging terrain. He criticised previous governments for neglecting Kishtwar, citing the halted 850 MW Ratle hydroelectric power project as an example. Singh instructed that ongoing hydropower projects be expedited to achieve the targeted electricity production of 8,000 MW.
Singh praised the efforts of BJP workers in Kishtwar, acknowledging their dedication and hard work in connecting with the local community under challenging circumstances. He commended the party's success in Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, attributing it to the sacrifices and efforts of previous generations of BJP leaders and workers.
Infrastructure Development and Environmental Concerns
The minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between public representatives and departments like Roads & Buildings (R&B) for timely execution of projects under schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and Jal Jeevan Mission. To enhance transparency, he directed the district administration to establish a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for sharing information with PRIs during field visits and incorporating their inputs for effective project implementation.
Addressing environmental concerns, Singh instructed officials to ensure dynamic monitoring of environmental clearances for infrastructure projects. He emphasised adopting best practices to protect public health and the environment. Additionally, he proposed a uniform policy requiring civil servants like teachers and doctors to provide compensation if they leave their jobs without following proper procedures.
Promoting Local Products and Sports
Singh called for mass awareness campaigns to promote government schemes and encouraged sports through Sansad Khelkud Spardha. He also stressed marketing local products such as cumin seeds and saffron. These initiatives aim to boost economic growth while preserving cultural heritage.
The minister's visit underscored his commitment to accelerating development in Kishtwar. By focusing on hydropower projects, infrastructure improvements, environmental protection, and local product promotion, Singh aims to transform Kishtwar into a major power hub while enhancing economic opportunities for its residents.
