The prospect of a US-China trade war resurfaced on Monday, as the Chinese Embassy in Washington responded to President-elect Donald Trump's renewed threat to impose a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports. Trump, set to take office on January 20, vowed to levy the tariffs unless China acts decisively to curb the flow of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, into the United States.
In a statement addressing the tariff threat, Chinese Embassy Spokesperson Liu Pengyu emphasized the mutual benefits of US-China economic ties and cautioned against the damaging consequences of escalating trade tensions. "No one will win a trade war or a tariff war," Liu warned.

Fentanyl Crisis at the Core of Dispute
Trump's proposed tariffs are tied to the United States' ongoing battle against fentanyl abuse, which has become a leading cause of death in the country. The opioid epidemic has spurred US demands for China to intensify its efforts against the trafficking of chemicals used to produce the drug.
In defence of its actions, Liu stated that China has already made progress in combatting narcotics trafficking. "The Chinese side has notified the US side of the progress made in US-related law enforcement operations against narcotics," Liu said, referencing agreements reached last year between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to tackle the fentanyl crisis. He further dismissed claims that China knowingly allows fentanyl precursors to enter the US, calling such allegations inconsistent with reality.
Incremental Progress
Since the Biden-Xi agreement, there have been steps toward cooperation in countering fentanyl production and trafficking. In June, China's top prosecutor directed law enforcement to prioritize drug-related crimes, and a rare joint US-China investigation into drug trafficking was launched. Further progress came in August, following a meeting of the joint counternarcotics working group, when China announced tighter controls on three critical chemicals used in fentanyl production.
Despite these measures, the US has continued to press China for stronger actions, including stricter regulation of precursor chemicals, enhanced law enforcement, and tighter controls on illicit financing.
Economic and Diplomatic Stakes
The threat of new tariffs adds another layer of complexity to the already strained US-China relationship. Economic analysts warn that a trade war could disrupt global supply chains, hurt businesses in both nations and dampen economic growth. The last trade war during the Trump administration led to billions in losses for US consumers and businesses, as well as retaliatory tariffs from China on American goods.
At the same time, Beijing faces the challenge of maintaining economic stability while addressing US concerns over drug trafficking. China's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic remains fragile, and heightened trade tensions could jeopardize its export-driven growth.
Future of US-China Relations
While Trump's rhetoric signals a tough stance, Beijing's measured response reflects its preference for dialogue over confrontation. Liu's statement suggests that China remains open to cooperation, as long as it is based on mutual respect and shared responsibilities.
As the January 20 inauguration approaches, the trajectory of US-China relations will hinge on how both sides navigate these intertwined issues of trade and public health. A collaborative approach to the fentanyl crisis could pave the way for broader economic cooperation, but a misstep could reignite a costly trade war with global ramifications.
