The US-Iran war may reach a turning point following reports that Washington set April 9 as a tentative date to end hostilities. President Donald Trump has temporarily halted strikes on Iranian energy targets, citing productive diplomatic exchanges. While formal briefings to Israel remain pending, back-channel negotiations are reportedly underway to resolve the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Israeli media reports claim the United States has quietly marked 9 April as a tentative moment to halt the US-Iran war, even as fighting continues and diplomatic signals shift, with Tehran said to be studying proposals passed on by Washington through third-party mediators.
These claims surfaced hours after United States President Donald Trump paused threatened strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, arguing that recent contacts with Tehran had been constructive and that there could be a path toward a broader agreement in the Middle East conflict.

US-Iran war deadline reported as 9 April by Israeli outlet
The daily Yedioth Ahronoth, citing an unnamed government official, reported that “Washington has set April 9 as a target date for ending the war, leaving about 21 days for continued fighting and negotiations,” suggesting a short window for both military pressure and diplomacy to run in parallel.
According to the same official, talks between the United States and Iran are expected later this week in Pakistan, though Israel has not been briefed on these discussions, or on Washington’s reported contacts with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who has strongly denied involvement.
US-Iran war contacts disputed by Qalibaf and watched by Israel
Qalibaf has rejected any suggestion of direct engagement with Washington, describing Trump’s earlier statements as “fake news” and accusing the United States president of trying to influence financial markets, even as Israeli officials believe indirect channels involving Qalibaf may already be active.
Yedioth Ahronoth reported that while there has been no formal briefing to Israel on negotiations, officials in Tel Aviv assess that some form of back-channel dialogue is under way, leaving Israel monitoring developments without clear insight into the detailed American proposals.
US-Iran war talks follow Trump’s threats over energy targets
The latest diplomatic activity follows Trump’s earlier ultimatum demanding that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its energy infrastructure, a threat later paused after what the United States president described as meaningful exchanges with Tehran over the previous two days.
Announcing the shift on social media, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “I AM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST [sic],” signalling optimism about de-escalation.
Trump further stated that “based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week”, the United States would delay strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure “for a five day period”, presenting the pause as a response to diplomatic progress.
Speaking to reporters later, Trump said that Washington and Tehran had identified around 15 areas of agreement and added, “I think there's a very good chance we're going to end up in a deal,” reinforcing suggestions that both sides are exploring a negotiated outcome to the US-Iran war.
Despite Qalibaf’s denial, CBS News reported that Iran has received an American message through mediators, described as a possible prelude to more formal talks, and quoted an Iranian Foreign Ministry official saying, “We received points from the US through mediators, and they are being reviewed.”
The wider conflict began on 28 February, when the United States and Israel carried out joint strikes against Iran, prompting retaliation from Tehran and drawing much of the Middle East into open confrontation that has left thousands dead across several weeks of clashes.
Figures compiled by US-based rights group HRANA state that at least 3,220 people have been killed in Iran since fighting started, including 1,398 civilians and 210 children, while the United States reports 13 fatalities and Israel lists 15 civilians and two soldiers killed.
| Country / Region | Total deaths | Civilians | Children | Military / Other | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iran | 3,220 | 1,398 | 210 | 1,? (remaining figure unspecified) | HRANA |
| United States | 13 | Not specified | Not specified | Not specified | US reports |
| Israel | 17 | 15 | Not specified | 2 soldiers | Israeli figures |
As Israeli media describe a 9 April target for ending the US-Iran war, Iran studies proposals relayed through intermediaries and Trump points to multiple areas of agreement, leaving military operations and fragile talks proceeding side by side while casualty numbers continue to rise across the region.
