President Trump recently stated that Prime Minister Modi assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia, amidst US tariffs on Indian imports. This diplomatic move aims to curb Moscow's energy revenue during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine while addressing challenges in India-US relations.
US President Donald Trump recently stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would cease buying oil from Russia. This comes after the US imposed tariffs on India due to these imports. "He's assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia," Trump mentioned at the White House, acknowledging that it would take some time to complete the process.
Trump highlighted that securing Modi's commitment was part of a larger diplomatic effort to cut off Moscow's energy revenue amid Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He also expressed intentions to persuade China to follow suit, suggesting it might be easier than recent diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

Concerns Over India's Oil Purchases
The US President voiced his dissatisfaction with India's continued purchase of Russian oil, which he believes indirectly funds President Vladimir Putin's war efforts. "I was not happy that India was buying oil," Trump remarked. However, New Delhi has yet to confirm Trump's account of their discussions.
For months, Prime Minister Modi resisted US pressure, with Indian officials arguing that these imports were essential for the country's energy security. India maintained that it must prioritize its economic interests amid ongoing global uncertainties.
Tariff Dispute and Diplomatic Moves
In August, Trump increased tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, citing India's alleged direct and indirect import of Russian oil. Despite this, during an October 9 conversation with Trump, PM Modi congratulated him on the Gaza peace plan and noted progress in trade negotiations despite the high tariffs.
The Trump administration values its relationship with India and expressed optimism following a meeting between the two leaders. A telephone call between Trump and Modi further underscored this sentiment.
India's Response to Tariffs
Since the imposition of tariffs, Indian officials have engaged in trade negotiations with their US counterparts. The tariffs were doubled from 25% due to India's continued imports of Russian oil. Washington argues that these purchases help fund Russia's war on Ukraine, but New Delhi dismisses this as a double standard, pointing out US trade links with Moscow.
"Modi is a great man. He loves Trump," said Trump, referring to himself in third person. He praised India as an incredible country and acknowledged Modi's long-standing leadership amidst frequent changes in leadership over the years.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between maintaining diplomatic relations and addressing global conflicts through economic measures. As both nations navigate these challenges, their actions will likely influence international dynamics significantly.
