During a visit to the ICAR Pusa campus, Jonathan Fleming, a Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management, praised India's efforts in empowering women through technology. After engaging with participants of the Namo Drone Didi scheme, he expressed enthusiasm about India's use of technology for women's empowerment. "I'm excited to see how India is using technology for women empowerment," Fleming stated.

The Namo Drone Didi scheme serves as an inspiration not only for rural Indian women but also for other countries. Fleming witnessed a live demonstration where four women participants—Gita, Sita, Priyanka, and Hemlata—used drones to spray fertilizers and pesticides on crops. This initiative highlights the significant role technology plays in transforming agricultural practices.
Empowering Women Through Technology
During their interaction with Fleming, the women shared how government support helped them embrace drone technology. They received training and financial aid, which led to improvements in their financial status. The participants expressed pride in their new roles as "Drone Didis," or drone sisters, reflecting their empowerment through this initiative.
Fleming noted a stark contrast between India and the USA regarding gender representation in drone technology. In the USA, all beneficiaries of drone incentive schemes are men, whereas in India, they are exclusively women. This difference underscores India's commitment to using technology for women's empowerment.
Innovations in Agricultural Technology
Fleming also visited the Drone Robotic and Machine Learning Centre at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). Here, he learned about various indigenous drones developed by the institute. These drones are revolutionising traditional farming methods by introducing advanced technological solutions.
The visit included officials from the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, IARI scientists, and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture. Additionally, delegates from IFFCO and state livelihood missions from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh were present. This diverse group highlighted the collaborative efforts in advancing agricultural technology.
Fleming's visit emphasised India's innovative approach to integrating technology into agriculture while promoting gender equality. The success of initiatives like Namo Drone Didi showcases how targeted support can empower women and transform industries traditionally dominated by men.
