The United States has rolled out a controversial self-deportation initiative called "Project Homecoming", to encourage undocumented migrants including a large number of Indians to voluntarily leave the country. The programme, launched by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2025, offers free flight tickets and a cash incentive of $2,600 to eligible individuals who agree to return to their home country.
According to estimates by the department Over 2.2 million migrants have already opted for the program. The US saves nearly $13,000 per person, compared to the $18,000 cost of forced deportation. Around $250 million has been redirected from refugee funds to support the initiative
The scheme has gained a lot of attention in India, especially after promotional materials featuring the Taj Mahal surfaced online, targeting the estimated 1.5 million undocumented Indians in the US, many of whom are visa overstays.
What is Project Homecoming? All Details
Under the US self-deportation program 2026, undocumented migrants can opt for a voluntary exit instead of facing forced deportation. The program was launched to reduce enforcement costs and for a more "orderly departure" process.

Key Benefits of Project Homecoming:
- One-way ticket to home country or a third country
- Cash Incentive of $2,600 as an exit bonus which is now increased from earlier $1,000
- Individuals who comply will not be detained
- Certain fines and bans may be relaxed
How to Apply for US Self-Deportation via CBP Home App
Undocumented migrants interested in the Project Homecoming registration process can follow these steps:
Step 1: Download the CBP Home app from app stores
Step 2: Enter personal details like name, date of birth, nationality
Step 3: Complete selfie verification for identity
Step 4: Submit intent to depart (choose destination country)
Step 5: Await verification and communication from DHS
Once approved, authorities arrange travel and process the exit bonus payment after confirmed departure
Important Things to Know Before Opting for Self-Deportation
While the scheme offers incentives, migrants should be cautious:
- It is available only for non-criminal undocumented individuals
- There may still be re-entry restrictions to the US
- The process does not offer legal protection or immigration relief
- Experts advise consulting an immigration lawyer before applying
