JD Vance India Visit: United States Vice President JD Vance began his first official visit to India on Monday, April 21. He is accompanied by his wife, Usha Vance and three children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
JD Vance's four-day India visit has come against the backdrop of ongoing concerns about US trade tariffs announced by the United States President Donald Trump earlier. Even though experts have highlighted that India will face relatively lesser Trump tariffs compared to Asian counterparts, the additional levies are likely to adversely impact auto, IT, pharma and other sector companies in India.

As US Vice President JD Vance began his four-day India visit today, here are all the details about him and his stance on US tariffs.
Who is JD Vance?
A former lawyer and a venture capitalist, JD Vance, is one of the key persons in the US politics after President Donald Trump. He took office as the US Vice President in January, months after emerging as a steadfast Maga (Make America Great Again) loyalist.
He has also served as a US Marine official in Iraq as a military journalist. The career path made him a vocal critic of American involvement overseas.
Unlike his unending praises for US President Donald Trump, JD Vance used to be a sharp critic of him, especially during the 2016 US Presidential election. During that time, he had voiced strong criticism of Donald Trump. In a previous interview with National Public Radio, he bluntly stated that "I can't stomach Trump". He also expressed concerns that Trump was "leading the white working class to a very dark place".
JD Vance India Visit: What It Means For India?
JD Vance's India will provide a crucial opportunity for India to negotiate US tariffs. Talks are already underway to avoid US tariffs with an early trade deal and boost ties with Trump administration.
Donald Trump, on April 2, announced tariffs on imports from more than 180 nations. Weeks later, he announced a 90-day pause on US tariffs, except China which will face more than 120% tariffs. Indian government officials are trying to finalise a deal with the US within the 90-day period on tariff hikes announced by Trump. According to Reuters, JD Vance's India visit will serve as the first step and a laying ground for Donald Trump's visit to India later in the year.
PM Modi, JD Vance To Review Progress on US-India Bilateral Agenda
PM Modi and JD Vance are expected to review progress on the bilateral agenda which was outlined in February, reported news agency Reuters on Monday. As per Reuters' report, the US-India trade deal will include 'fairness' in their two-way trade and announcements to boost defence partnership.
Earlier, Reuters had reported that the Indian government is willing to cut tariffs on more than half of its imports from the US, which were with a total $41.8 billion in 2024, as part of a trade deal. US is India's largest trading partner and their two-way bilateral trade reached$129 billion in 2024, with a $45.7 billion surplus in favour of India.
