V Narayanan has been appointed as the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, effective January 14. With nearly 40 years of experience in propulsion technology, he aims to lead ISRO's ambitious space missions and innovations.
V Narayanan has been named the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), taking over from S Somanath. The Union government disclosed this on a Tuesday. In addition to his role as chairman, Narayanan will also serve as the secretary of the department of space. This landmark appointment is set to commence on January 14, with Narayanan steering the organization into its future endeavors.

Narayanan's tenure as the head of ISRO and secretary of the department of space is slated to last for two years or until further directives are issued. This decision was confirmed by the appointments committee of the Cabinet, which stated, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri V. Narayanan, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Valiamala as Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, Space Commission for a period of two years with effect from 14.01.2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
With nearly four decades of expertise in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, V Narayanan stands out as a preeminent scientist. His career with ISRO began in 1984, and over the years, he has held various significant positions, most notably as the director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). Narayanan's initial work concentrated on the solid propulsion aspects of sounding rockets, as well as the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) projects at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). His contributions have been pivotal in the development of ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and composite igniter cases, underscoring his integral role in ISRO's propulsion technology advancements.
Currently, he is at the helm of the LPSC, a key center within ISRO located in Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, with a unit in Bengaluru. The LPSC plays a crucial role in the organization's propulsion system development and has been instrumental in the success of various missions.
ISRO has made headlines for its development of SpaDex, an indigenous space docking technology. This innovation is critical for future missions like Chandrayaan 4 and Gaganyaan, placing India among a select group of nations with such advanced capabilities, including the United States, Russia, and China. Narayanan's leadership comes at a time when ISRO is pushing the boundaries of space exploration and technology, marking a new chapter in India's space journey.
In closing, V Narayanan's appointment as the new chairman of ISRO heralds an era of continued innovation and exploration for the organization. His extensive experience and accomplishments in rocket and spacecraft propulsion will undoubtedly propel ISRO towards achieving its ambitious goals in space technology and exploration. As Narayanan takes the reins, the space community eagerly anticipates the advancements and milestones that ISRO will achieve under his guidance.
