Valmiki Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage and author of the epic Ramayana. Known as the Adikavi or "First Poet" of Sanskrit literature, Maharishi Valmiki's life and teachings are commemorated through religious events, processions, and public gatherings across India.

Valmiki Jayanti 2025 Holiday in Delhi; Govt Offices, Liquor Shops, Schools, Colleges to Stay Shut on 7 October
The Delhi Government has declared a public and gazetted holiday on October 7, 2025, to observe Valmiki Jayanti. All government schools, colleges, and offices in the national capital will remain closed on Tuesday. In addition, liquor shops in Delhi will also remain closed on October 7 as the day will be observed as a dry day, as per the government's excise policy.
The Directorate of Education (DoE) has included Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti in the official school holiday calendar 2025-26, confirming a complete closure of educational institutions in Delhi.
Local reports suggest that markets and shops, especially in North and Central Delhi, may either remain shut or operate with limited hours due to cultural processions and community celebrations.
School Holiday in Uttar Pradesh on October 7 for Valmiki Jayanti
The Uttar Pradesh government has officially declared October 7 a public holiday across the state to mark Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. An official circular was issued on October 5, 2025, confirming that all government-run schools, colleges, and public offices will remain closed on the day.
Bank Holidays Tomorrow in Karnataka, Odisha and Other States
According to the RBI Bank Holiday Calendar, banking operations will be suspended on October 7, 2025, in the following states:
- Karnataka
- Odisha
- Chandigarh
- Himachal Pradesh
Banks in these states will remain closed for physical services, though online banking, ATM withdrawals, and digital payments will continue to function as usual. Customers are advised to complete urgent banking transactions in advance.
What Is Valmiki Jayanti and Why Is It Celebrated?
Valmiki Jayanti is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashwin, usually falling in September or October. The day honours Maharishi Valmiki, the composer of the Ramayana and is widely celebrated across North India, especially among the Valmiki community.
Devotees participate in temple visits, community service, Ramayana recitations and processions to celebrate the life and contributions of the sage.
Citizens in the affected states are advised to plan travel, banking and government work accordingly, as several essential services will be unavailable or limited.
