Vodafone Idea has introduced its 5G services in India, beginning with Mumbai and planning to expand to five more cities. This move aims to reduce subscriber loss and strengthen its position against larger competitors in the world's second-largest telecom market. Initially, Vodafone Idea's 5G will be available as an unlimited add-on for plans starting at Rs 299, though the duration of this offer is unspecified.

5G Expansion Plans
Following Mumbai, Vodafone Idea will extend its 5G services to Delhi, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Patna, and Mysore by April. The next phase will include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Chennai. Chief Technology Officer Jagbir Singh mentioned that the rollout would continue based on the penetration of 5G devices and service demand. However, Singh did not specify the coverage extent or user targets for the first year.
Market Competition and Strategy
Currently, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel dominate India's 5G market with significant subscriber bases. As of December 2024, Jio had 170 million 5G users, while Bharti Airtel had 120 million. Vodafone Idea plans to roll out its services across 100 cities in 17 circles over three years. The company has enough capital to support this expansion strategy.
Infrastructure and Network Management
In Mumbai, Vodafone Idea has strategically placed sites in high-traffic areas, residential zones, and commercial districts to meet consumer needs. Singh noted that while precise projections are premature, there has been a steady increase in 5G handset penetration among subscribers over recent quarters. This trend suggests a strong uptake in urban markets and among data-heavy users.
Technological Advancements
Vodafone Idea sees an advantage in deploying the latest technology and advanced systems for its 5G network. Singh stated that these systems are designed to minimise downtime during network upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption for users. The company also has infrastructure to monitor network performance and optimise coverage based on real-time demand.
Monetisation Challenges
Monetising 5G remains challenging due to high infrastructure costs and price-sensitive consumers. However, sectors like telemedicine, IoT-enabled smart cities, and AR/VR applications offer growth opportunities. Singh believes focusing on these areas will create new revenue streams and transform the digital landscape.
Investment Plans
Vodafone Idea plans to invest Rs 50,000-55,000 crore over the next three years. Approximately half of this investment is allocated for 5G development, with the remainder for expanding 4G coverage and capacity. The success of the 5G rollout depends on customer adoption and monetisation opportunities.
The introduction of 5G is expected to enhance Vodafone Idea's network quality and services. This improvement should help address subscriber churn by offering better connectivity options alongside ongoing enhancements in their existing 4G network.
