The popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp, owned by Meta, appeared to be experiencing disruptions for several users on Saturday. Starting in the evening, many users reported facing issues with key features of the app, including difficulties in uploading statuses and sending messages. The outage affected users across different regions in the country, leading to widespread complaints on social media platforms as people struggled to communicate.
Some users were not able to upload their statuses, while others experienced issues when trying to send messages, especially in group chats. As the number of affected users grew, many took to social media to talk about the issue. They started using the hashtag #Whatsappdown on X, popularly known as Twitter to highlight the ongoing server issues, bringing more attention to the service disruption.

At least 521 complaints has been filed until 5:17 p.m., according to DownDetector, which monitors outages by compiling status information from multiple sources, including user-submitted faults on its platform. Of these, 85% of complaints concerned message sending, 12% involved the app issues, and 3% involved login issues.
#WhatsAppDown Trending
Several users took to X to share their frustration and confusion during the outage. Here is how people reacted with the hashtag #WhatsAppDown.
The hashtag #WhatsAppDown quickly began trending as more users realized it was a platform-wide issue, not just a personal glitch. One user advised everyone to stay calm, tweeting, "Stop restarting your phone. It's not you. WhatsApp is down. Facebook and Instagram too. #whatsappdown"
Some users even suspected their own devices were at fault. A user shared, "I thought it was an issue with iOS 18.4 since I started facing it after the upgrade. I restarted my phone and tried to upload a WhatsApp status, but it didn't work. Then I Googled it and found out that WhatsApp is down."
Another user humorously linked it to today's UPI server outage and tweeted, "#UPIDown के बाद पेश-ए-खिदमत #WhatsAppDown सोशल मैसेजिंग व्हाट्सएप हजारों यूजर्स के लिए काम नहीं कर रहा था।" ("After #UPIDown, presenting #WhatsAppDown. The social messaging app WhatsApp was not working for thousands of users.")
WhatsApp's parent company Meta has not yet issued an official statement regarding the service outage that disrupted its platform on Saturday. Meanwhile, some users also reported facing similar issues on Facebook and Instagram, which are also owned by Meta. The problems ranged from difficulties in sending messages to trouble accessing certain features, leading to widespread discussions about the outage online.
It is the second outage in a year in just over two months, following a major disruption in February that left users around the world struggling to access the messaging platform. During that outage, users were unable to connect, send messages through the WhatsApp app or WhatsApp Web, or make voice and video calls.
WhatsApp Coincides With UPI Server Down on Saturday
Hundreds of customers reported unsuccessful transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) across many platforms, such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm, which also contributed to the apparent WhatsApp issue. According to an X post by the regulatory authority NPCI, "intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines" seemed the reason of the outage.
UPI Service Resumes
More than 3,000 users across India reported facing issues with UPI apps on Saturday, according to Downdetector. Popular digital payment platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay were among those affected, with users unable to complete online transactions for a few hours. The disruption led to widespread inconvenience, especially for those relying on UPI for daily payments. However, after several hours of service instability, the issue was gradually resolved. By around 5 PM, most users reported that the services had been restored, allowing them to resume their online transactions and payment activities normally.
