Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished and emotionally significant festivals for married Hindu women in India. On this day, women undertake a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise, known as the Nirjala Vrat, where they abstain from both food and water as a symbol of their unwavering love and prayers for the long life, health and prosperity of their husbands.
Karva Chauth 2025 Date, Timing: Panchang Shubh Muhurat, Thithi
In 2025, Karwa Chauth will be observed on Friday, October 10. According to the Drik Panchang, the festival is celebrated annually on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the Kartik month as per the Hindu lunar calendar.

This year, there was initial confusion about the correct date of observance, as the Chaturthi tithi spans two days. However, after consulting the Hindu calendar, it has been clarified that the Chaturthi tithi begins on October 9 at 10:54 PM and ends on October 10 at 7:38 PM. Since the fasting and rituals must align with the moonrise and the presence of Chaturthi tithi during the evening puja, October 10 is the correct date for Karwa Chauth in 2025.
Karva Chauth 2025 Moonrise & Puja Timing
The exact timing of moonrise is crucial on Karwa Chauth, as the fast is only broken after seeing the moon. While moonrise times vary slightly by location, women are advised to follow updated local panchang or trusted astronomical sources of your location to determine the correct time for puja and moon sighting at your place on October 10, 2025.
Karwa Chauth Katha: Significance and Historical Background
One of the legends associated with Karwa Chauth is that of Goddess Parvati, who is believed to have undertaken a rigorous fast and penance to win Lord Shiva's affection and eternal love. Inspired by her dedication, married women emulate this devotion by fasting for the long life and well-being of their spouses.
Beyond mythology, Karwa Chauth has historically been a celebration of marital fidelity, love and the strength of the relationship between husband and wife. It is also seen as a time for family bonding, as women receive support from their families, especially mothers-in-law, and connect with other women observing the fast.
During the day, women not only pray for their husbands but also worship deities like Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Karwa Mata, seeking blessings for a harmonious and joyful married life. The fast and accompanying rituals serve to strengthen the emotional and spiritual connection between partners, while also reinforcing traditional family values.
Karwa Chauth 2025 Vrat and Sargi; Fasting and Puja Rituals
The observance of Karwa Chauth begins in the early hours of the morning, before dawn, with a special meal known as Sargi. This meal is usually prepared by the mother-in-law and includes fruits, sweets, dry fruits, parathas and other nourishing items meant to sustain the woman throughout the day's fast.
After sunrise, women begin their Nirjala Vrat, refraining from consuming any food or water until they see the moon. This rigorous fast is a profound act of devotion, demanding physical endurance and mental strength.
As the sun sets, women dress in traditional attire, often in bright red or festive colours, and adorn themselves with jewellery, bangles, sindoor (vermilion) and mehendi (henna).
In the evening, women gather in groups with friends and family to participate in the Karwa Chauth puja. A beautifully decorated puja thali is prepared, containing an earthen pot (karwa), diya (lamp), sweets and sindoor. Women then listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha, which narrates stories of devotion, sacrifice and divine blessings associated with the festival.
Once the moon rises, the fasting women view the moon through a sieve, followed by a glimpse of their husband's face through the same sieve. Their husbands then offer them the first sip of water and a bite of food, marking the end of the fast.
