There is a confusion. When will Nirmala Sitharaman present the Union Budget 2026, February 1 or 2? Some reports say that the upcoming budget may be presented on February 2, altering the historically followed practice of presenting budgets on February 1. This is because this time February 1 falls on a Sunday.

Government's Position So Far
According to reports from news agency PTI, if parliamentary traditions are followed, the budget could still be read out on Sunday itself. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the final decision rests with the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, the body that sets the schedule for Parliament's sessions.
Meanwhile, a CNBC-TV18 report suggests that preparations are already underway for February 1. Sources told the channel that the government intends to go ahead with the budget on the usual date, despite it being a Sunday.
At the same time, speculation continues that the announcement could be shifted to February 2. The uncertainty remains because the official calendar for the budget session of Parliament has not yet been released. Only once those dates are confirmed will the presentation day be final.
Weekend Budgets Are Not New
This is not the first time the Union Budget has landed on a weekend. In 2025, Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget on a Saturday. Arun Jaitley also delivered budgets on weekends: February 28, 2015, was a Saturday, and February 28, 2016, was a Sunday. The 2016 budget was notable because it fell in a leap year.
Tradition Meets Calendar Clash
For nearly a decade, India's Union Budget has been presented on February 1 every year. This practice began in 2017 when then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley shifted the date from the last day of February to the first day of the month. The reason was practical: it gave Parliament enough time to debate and pass the budget before the new financial year starts on April 1.
This year, however, the calendar has created a puzzle. February 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday. That has raised questions about whether the government will stick to the usual date or move the presentation to Monday, February 2.
Before 2017, the budget was always presented on the last day of February. That system created delays because Parliament could not pass the budget before the financial year began. To bridge the gap, lawmakers were compelled to approve something called a "Vote on Account".
A Vote on Account is a temporary approval that allows the government to withdraw money from the Consolidated Fund of India-the country's main account that holds all revenues and loans-for the first few months of the year. This ensured that essential spending could continue until the full budget was passed.
By moving the presentation date to February 1, the government eliminated the need for this temporary arrangement. Now, the budget can be debated and passed in time for the new financial year starting April 1, making the process smoother and more efficient.
The Road Ahead
As of now, February 1, 2026, remains the most likely date for the Union Budget presentation. The final word will come only when the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs announces the schedule for the budget session.
