Indian Railways is an essential lifeline for the country's commercial and passenger transportation, linking many different regions and acting as a critical infrastructure element with a route length of more than 62,600 km.
In terms of size, it oversees the fourth-largest national railway network. As of March 31, 2024, the Indian railway network has 69,181 km (42,987 mi) of running distance as per the Ministry of Railway data. If we talk about the number of passengers, as one of the biggest railway networks in the world and a vital source of revenue and development for India, the Indian Railways carries over two crore passengers every day. In both freight and passenger services, it is essential to infrastructure development, job creation, and economic integration.
The Indian Railways operates more than 7,308 stations, and 13,000 trains carrying over 20 million passengers daily. The Railway train stations generate millions of rupees a year from a variety of sources, including platform tickets, stores, and advertisements.
Which is the richest railway station in India?
In the fiscal year (FY) 2023-2024, New Delhi Railway Station, which is projected to be turned into a world-class station, maintained its top spot among the 100 busiest and highest-earning railway stations in the nation as per data, released by the Ministry of Railways.
New Delhi Railway Station generated over Rs 3,337 crore from 39,362,272 passengers, followed by Howrah Railway Station which received over Rs 1,692 crore from 61,329,319 foot traffic, and Chennai's MGR Central Railway Station which generated Rs 1,299 crore from 30,599,837 passengers in FY 2023-2024. Among the top 100 railway stations, these three have set the standard for yearly revenue and passenger volume.
According to the railway data, other richer railway stations, followed by the first three are Secunderabad, which earned Rs 12,76 crore annually from 27,776,937 passengers; Hazrat Nizamuddin, which earned Rs 1,227 crore from 14,537,686 passengers; Mumbai's Lokmanaya Tilak terminal, which earned Rs 1,036 crore from 14,680,379 passengers; Ahmedabad, which earned Rs 1,010 crore from 18,260,021 passengers; and Mumbai CST, which made Rs 9,82 crore from 51,652,230 customers. All these other railway stations are classified as NSG-1 (Non-Suburban Grade-I) category.
In addition to these NGS-1 stations, Anand Vihar in Delhi and Pune railway station in Maharashtra have been listed among the top 100 earning stations. Anand Vihar recorded Rs 8,44 crore from 12,235,275 passengers, while Pune had an annual profit of Rs 9,76 crore from 22,256,812 passengers in FY 2023-24.
Data shows that 16 Northern Railway stations are among the top 100 earning stations, followed by 15 Southern Railway stations, 11 Central Railway stations, 9 East Central Railway stations, 7 Eastern Railway stations, and 6 Northern Central Railway stations. Railway officials state that the classification of railway stations is carried out every five years.
