Tarique Rahman, also known as Tarique Zia, has become one of the most influential political figures in Bangladesh after the February 2026 national elections, where the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a historic majority. Early Life and Political Background
Born on November 20, 1965, Tarique Rahman is the son of Bangladesh's founding president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and is a part of the country's long-standing political dynasty.
He entered politics in the late 1980s, mobilising grassroots workers during the anti-Ershad movement and later supporting BNP's successful 1991 election campaign. Rahman served as acting BNP chairperson from 2018 during Khaleda Zia's imprisonment and was formally appointed party chairperson in January 2026 after her death.
After living in exile in London since 2008 due to legal cases filed during the Awami League era, he returned to Bangladesh in December 2025, setting the stage for BNP's electoral comeback.

According to his election affidavit: tarique rehman has an Annual income of Tk 6.76 lakh which is equivalent to Rs. 5,00,720.66 (from shares, bonds, and bank deposits).
He also has Bank deposits of around Tk 1.23 crore, including Tk 31.6 lakh in savings/current accounts. Also shares worth approximately Tk 68.5 lakh. Other assets like furniture under Tk 2 lakh and gold worth Tk 2,950.
Family Assets
His wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman reportedly earns Tk 35.6 lakh annually and holds about Tk 1 crore in bank deposits, including Tk 66.5 lakh in current savings.
The family also owns over 2 acres of land in Bogura. Inherited land in Gazipur and Cox's Bazar from his late brother Arafat Rahman Koko. Shared ownership of 111.25 decimals of land and an 800-sq-ft duplex house.

As per the publicly available information, Tarique Rahman has faced corruption allegations linked to the 2001-2006 BNP government and was arrested during the 2007 military-backed administration charges his supporters describe as politically motivated. Despite years in exile, he remained the de facto leader of BNP, guiding the party's organisational revival and electoral resurgence, culminating in the 2026 victory.
