Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, better known as El Mencho, the feared leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed in a major operation carried out by Mexican security forces on Sunday. His death triggered widespread unrest across parts of Mexico, with vehicles set ablaze and armed gunmen blocking highways in several states.
El Mencho Killed in Federal Operation in Jalisco
According to an official statement from the Mexican government, El Mencho was slain during a targeted federal raid in the western state of Jalisco early Sunday morning. The operation focused on dismantling the CJNG's leadership structure and was conducted by elite Mexican special forces.

The US Embassy in Mexico confirmed the development in a post on X (Twitter), stating that the mission was part of bilateral cooperation between Mexico and the United States. US authorities provided intelligence support to Mexican forces during the operation.
Soon after news of El Mencho's death emerged, multiple regions reported violent flare-ups. Vehicles were torched, roads were blocked, and armed groups were seen across highways, reflecting the cartel's rapid retaliatory tactics.
Security analysts compared the moment to the killing of Pablo Escobar, the infamous Colombian drug lord, noting the symbolic and operational significance of neutralising one of the most powerful cartel leaders in modern Mexico.
Who Was El Mencho?
Born as Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, he later adopted the first name Nemesio, reportedly in honour of a godfather whose identity remains unknown. Over time, he became widely known as "El Mencho," a nickname with no clear meaning or direct translation in Spanish.
El Mencho rose to prominence as the founder and leader of CJNG, transforming it into one of the most violent and sophisticated criminal organisations in the Western Hemisphere.
He is regarded as one of the most significant Mexican drug traffickers eliminated since the capture of Sinaloa Cartel figures Joaquin El Chapo Guzman and Ismael Zambada, both of whom are currently serving prison sentences in the United States.
El Mencho Net Worth: How Much He Earned
There is no confirmed figure for El Mencho's net worth, given the illegal nature of cartel finances. However, US authorities have offered estimates over the years. In 2019, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) suggested his wealth could exceed $1 billion.
An archived Univision report quoted DEA agent Kyle Mori as saying, "I would say he has at least $500 million and it could even exceed $1 billion."
These figures remain estimates, as cartel revenues from narcotics trafficking, extortion, and money laundering are difficult to quantify precisely.
El Mencho's Wife, Children: Know About His Family and Inner Circle
El Mencho was married to Rosalinda Gonzalez Valencia, whose relatives are linked to Los Cuinis, a group believed to manage CJNG's financial operations. Reports indicate the couple married in 1996 but legally separated in 2018.
Reports have long pointed to Rosalinda's family network as a critical component in handling cartel finances and assets associated with El Mencho's wealth.
The couple had three children, among which Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez, known as El Menchito, who once served as second-in-command and is now convicted
Jessica Johana Oseguera Gonzalez, also called La Negra, who allegedly managed business fronts including sushi restaurants and tequila ventures linked to CJNG and was jailed in 2021.
CJNG's Role in Global Drug Trade
The CJNG has been identified by US authorities as one of the leading suppliers of cocaine to the United States, on par with the Sinaloa cartel. The organisation is also heavily involved in the production and trafficking of fentanyl and methamphetamines, making it a central target in US-Mexico anti-drug efforts.
