India Post has officially announced the discontinuation of its iconic Registered Post service from September 1st this year. This is definitely the end of a legacy spanning over five decades, during which registered post was one of the most trusted and legally valid communication methods for millions of Indians. This postal service was used by government offices, courts, small traders, and people living in rural India, as registered post was considered very secure.
India Post has decided to merge Registered Post with Speed Post. So all the major features of Registered Post, like secure handling, proof of delivery, addressee-specific delivery, and tracking updates, will now be provided as value-added services under the Speed Post service.

Why Is Registered Post Being Discontinued?
According to official data, the use of Registered Post has declined over the years. From 2011 to 2012, India Post handled about 244.4 million Registered Post items, which dropped to 184.6 million in 2019 to 2020, a decline of nearly 25%. The fall in demand for registered post is mainly because of the rise of digital communication, private courier services, and the growth of e-commerce platforms that offer faster and more convenient delivery options. Postal officials say that maintaining two similar services has become operationally redundant.
One of the biggest talking points around this decision is the impact on cost because the Registered Post was a very affordable mailing option, with prices ranging from Rs. 25 to 30. On the other hand, Speed Post charges are slightly higher and on the more expensive side, as they start at Rs. 41, so this pricing difference will definitely have an impact on those who relied on registered post, as the service cost was cheaper.
Who Will Be Affected?
The discontinuation of registered posts is going to impact a lot of users, including:
- Courts and legal institutions, where registered post was used actively as legal proof of communication
- Even universities and educational boards used it very often for document dispatch.
- Government departments, rural citizens, and senior citizens also preferred this mode of communication because of its simplicity and low cost.
Benefits of the Registered Post-Speed Post Merger
While the emotional and financial impact of the move cannot be ignored, India Post says that the merger will benefit users in the long run. The new consolidated service will provide faster delivery times, real-time tracking through digital platforms, enhanced customer convenience, and above all, it will be an operational efficiency for India Post.
Farewell to Registered Post
This is definitely the end of an era for India's communication history. As India Post retires Registered Post. Generations of Indians have grown up using this service for personal letters or other documents. While Speed Post now takes centre stage, the legacy of Registered Post will remain highly valued.
