The Bima Sakhi Yojana, a scheme by the Central government and LIC, is gaining significant traction in Goa. This initiative, aimed at empowering women aged 18 and above, follows its initial launch in Haryana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the scheme in December 2024, and recently, the Goa government, led by Pramod Sawant, implemented it in collaboration with LIC.

Under this programme, two lakh women insurance agents will be recruited over three years. The scheme targets women aged 18 to 70 who have completed Class 10. During the launch, Chief Minister Sawant emphasised that the initiative not only provides financial support but also aligns with the government's goal of ensuring insurance for all. He encouraged women to join and contribute to Viksit Bharat 2047.
Empowering Women Through Financial Independence
Vijay Saxena, Director of Planning and Statistics and Evaluation, highlighted that the Bima Sakhi Yojana aims to empower women by offering training and opportunities as LIC insurance agents. The programme offers a monthly stipend: Rs 7,000 in the first year, Rs 6,000 in the second year, and Rs 5,000 in the third year. Additionally, women completing 24 life insurance policies receive a Rs 48,000 commission.
The scheme has seen enthusiastic participation from women eager to take advantage of these opportunities. Saxena noted that it promotes financial literacy and aims to increase life insurance coverage among women. The programme's success is evident as many women have shown interest since its launch.
Personal Experiences of Bima Sakhis
Gauri Suresh Naik, a student from Merces village and one of Goa's first Bima Sakhis, expressed gratitude for the initiative. She stated that managing expenses as a student is challenging, but this scheme provides passive income supporting her education and personal needs. Naik shared that it has empowered her financially and boosted her confidence.
Sulbha Dattatray Karpe from Banastarim village views the scheme as a beneficial part-time job. She urged other women to participate, highlighting benefits like stipends and commissions on policies. Karpe believes being an agent can significantly increase income while providing economic opportunities for rural women.
The Bima Sakhi Yojana is making strides in empowering women through financial independence and increased insurance awareness. By offering training and financial incentives, it encourages women's participation in economic activities while supporting their personal growth.
