On Sunday the World Bank granted a loan of $500 million for India for enhancing the quality as well as governance of school education across six states, spanning 15 lakh schools. The STARS or Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Results for States programme to be applied in states including Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Kerala will on a combined basis cover 25 crore students and one crore teachers.

"India recognizes the need to significantly improve its learning outcomes to fuel future growth and meet the demands of the labor market," said Junaid Ahmad, World Bank Country Director in India.
Further he said that the STARS programme will assist and strengthen local-level implementation, invest in teacher capacity and ensure that none of the child regardless of their background is deprived of the basic right to education.
On a national scale, STARS via the Samagra Shiksha in association with the six-states would enable improvement in learning assessment systems, reinforce classroom instruction and remediation, work towards school-to-work transition, and strengthen governance as well as decentralised management, the World Bank said in a statement.
STARS programme, established on the long standing association between India and the World Bank, aims to strengthen school education in the country and support the country's mission of extending 'Education for All'. Earlier targeting this goal, the World Bank extended an assistance of over $3 billion.
