A Mumbai-techie who is on a maternity leave woke up to a shock as she got a mid-night call from the bank on October 22 saying that transactions on her debit card were executed internationally. And it was not just one transaction that was carried out using her card but as many as 56 illicit transactions.

In a report by the leading news daily, it has been reported that in a matter of few minutes time Rs. 3.3 lakh has been siphoned off from her bank account.
The victim has filed a police complaint but with little progress made so far.
The victim's husband said that for the transactions executed abroad using her wife's card they did not received any call or SMS text requiring OTP. The couple further informed that they never used their cards internationally and only used it to buy products from some retail online sites of India.
After the pre-recorded message over phone was reported to the bank, the concerned debit card was blocked by the bank on an immediate basis. Also, the victim's says it to be bank's negligence and says as the transactions were carried out early in the morning, the bank should have taken notice of them and before approving the same should have called the actual debit cardholder.
"One of the possibilities is that the card was cloned. An OTP is not required when a card is used internationally. The other possibility is that her card details were compromised. Recent media reports revealed that the details of 1.3 million cards were leaked", said the cyberexpert.
As per RBI rules, if the transaction are carried out fraudulently overseas, the bank is liable to revert the amount into the bank holder's account in a matter of 10 working days.
